  1. Hello, I am writing a paper on the biking community. I enjoy biking because it is an amazing stress reliever for me. I was wondering why you all enjoy biking? What do you like about the biking community? What has changed with biking over the years? and anything else you think would be helpful!

Thanks so much ! Happy pedaling (:

  2. Same as you, stress relief. It does it the same way most of my other stress relief hobbies do, by requiring full focus and concentration. When I'm going hard on the bike I'm thinking about pedaling hard and breathing, not work, bills, life, etc. Obviously the physical fitness aspect is there too and the competitive spirit (with myself) to get better at something.

  3. Same as the above, fun, stress relief, and it's good for my body so I can live a long and healthy life.

What's changed over the years? A LOT has changed since I started over 40 years ago and not for the better in my opinion at least in some areas. There are a lot of nonsensical stuff going on in the industry today as well that I don't want to get into a pissing match about, but just to suffice it to say that biking use to be all about being a non complex simple easy to fix mode of transportation that has been whored today with even a worsening of this coming.

  4. to keep my body shape!

  5. As a kid and teen, bicycles were synonymous with bmx and therefore was not only childish, but a waste of money. I remember kids lusted over "alloy rims," a phrase spoken with reverence in the same hushed tones as a 4K diamond I suppose. I wasn't into jumping in the air with a tiny bike underneath just to squish some alloy rims, so I tried to ignore bikes.

I had to get some basic transportation in college however, and bought an inexpensive bicycle. Truth be told, it was a piece of junk. Everything creaked. Not a touch of grease anywhere. Hi ten steel. Bought from a shop with a lazy, bitter owner.

The bike flew. It was amazing and exhilarating. I didn't even know how to shift. Fortunately, I knew how to use the brakes.

I was hooked. By my 3rd bike purchase, I had finally figured out how to buy and size a bike properly.

I've been into riding, off and on road since then, with long layoffs of several years at a time.

But the dream remains: being self sufficient without a car, staying in shape, and being kind to the environment. The dream lives.
