In that case there's a good book your could usefully read. Radial lacing puts a large tension on the hub flange that tangential lacing does not. Which is why plenty of manufacturers don't warranty it for their hubs.

The latest Windcheetah has the different sides of the front wheels laced up differently to take advantage of the relative merits of each. From their web site, "two piece hub design using straight pull spokes, radial on the outer edge to counteract the high lateral loading generated by the Windcheetah's renowned cornering prowess, and tangentially spoked on the inside flange to handle the considerable braking torque".

How is that related to a fragile _rim_ breaking? The difference at the hub is obvious, but does it really make that much difference at the rim?

Sorry, I read "rim" as "flange", of course - another case of beer-induced over-hasty posting. People _usually_ talk about flanges breaking when radial lacing is discussed!
