What Junior Development should be.

Hey, I'm a bit biased here, but Bill totally overlooked (why am I not surprised) a great new Junior
Development Program I've spent this last year putting together. We've got far less money than most
of these other programs, but our riders know the score and WANT to ride with each other. To checkout
our current roster (we're still looking for 2 more spots to fill) go to

In addition to the racing team, we're have programs for introducing U 15 kids to racing on Cape Cod.
It's not a lot right now, but it has grown faster than I anticipated.

(5 votes) 7th Emphasize the NEBRA website (1 vote)

The NEBRA Annual Meeting then concluded, Mr. Miller gave his brief summary of USAC rule changes
for 2004 and the race scheduling meeting was held. <snip> The #2 item on the NEBRA agenda is
supposedly Junior development. In NE this seems to have been defined as finding the next World
Champion, as opposed to Rad's vision. I'm witholding publishing my opinion on Mike Norton races,
and how Juniors were treated at them. I have NOT been impressed with the actions here. The talk
is great, the reality leaves something to be desired. Politics are brutal at best and the kids
get hurt because everyone here is positioning themselves as THE hero. Hey folks It's not about
US, it's about the kids and our future. This points out what the NE is capable of:

personality here, as opposed to Rad's dedication to kids. Yes I know about Necsa cycling, and
the NHJCA and I like Some of the people leading the efforts, but the politics seem to take

credentials as a racer, but the Racers who have the credentials haven't done a whole hell of a
lot to get kids into the sport. Bill C

And Bill and Meesha have also being doing things for kids. You are all to be applauded for your
efforts. But, I think Bill's point was more that the regional organizational aspect of cycling in
the NE is not as interested in helping kids get into the sport as they could/should be.

Chris this is exactly what needs to happen, and with the people you've got on board I'm sure you'll
do a good job of giving kids a good experience, and you've already got one future star. Bill C

Should've checked before I said one. I didn't know that Chris had Morgan and Ben too. This is a
great buch of kids, and this should be a really good program. If Chris wasn't doing things right
these parents wouldn't have their kids with him. Bill C

I've heard alot of GREAT things about this incredible program. The Rad Racing could be a model for
many other clubs to take note of. NOW is the time to get youngsters in the US interested. If you
have a child age 8-14, I GUARANTEE they've heard of Lance Armstrong. Sorry all you Tyler fans, the
'rider' of the year is NOT as famous.

I appreciate the compliment, but I'll reserve judgement until next September. However, I wouldn't be
in this position without the riders. Cape Cod has a far greater rider base than anyone in NE
realizes, and the Cape is largely overlooked for cycling in general. Regarding Brian's comments,
though, I won't point fingers or criticize anyone in particular, but my impression of NE is everyone
wants to talk; "Let's make and effort...Let's discuss...Everyone agreed that more needs to be
done..." Planning is important, but I think its time to do.

We're under budget, but we have the most important things, which is commitment. All the riders know
this isn't a free ride and they're all putting time into the team. We'll see what we can do, but I
think its gonna be an exciting year!

Just to be clear, I was expressing what I though Bill was saying. I'm not involved with, and
have absolutely no desire to be involved with, the boys (predominantly) of NEBRA. My previous
experience with several of them is that the focus is on the Elite and not bringing new blood
into the sport. And Sharon knows exactly what I'm talking about.

Folks: A fair amount of the minutes were snipped. In fact, NEBRA has assembled approximately $14,000
to date to be spent on the priorities established by the vote that was shown. Clubs were and are
asked to submit proposals for grants and Junior development is a high priority and money will be
provided to fund those Clubs' efforts. I set NEBRA up as a §501(c)(3) corporation and there is a
high degree of technical compliance that must be adhered to (i.e. NEBRA is limited in what it can
directly do itself). The bottom line is for the Clubs and folks such as yourselves to make the
plans, seek the funding from NEBRA and then do it.

My time at NEBRA is done -- I have stayed longer than I intended when I first started in on this --
but the new Directors for 2004 will be most responsive in addressing the needs of Junior development
as well as other priorities for New England cycling. Best, Bill Black

publicize that the resources are available and waiting to be ccoupled with acction from the
