  1. I'm thinking about getting Windsor Pilates. Any one else use this?
I can't run and due to the kids and my hubbys schedule I can't do
    much else.

    So, what do you do?

  2. Try doing some pushups and pushaways.

  3. I have a hectic schedule too.
What works best for me working at home wise is the Walk Away the Pounds
videos. They are cheap if you buy them on ebay. There is a bunch of
different levels on tape, so you can pick which one you have time to do that
    day.

I use the Windsor Pilates tapes. I like them...they make you want to scream
out loud when you start feeling the burn :o)

I don't really think it's like yoga, because you count how many reps you've
done and change exercise positions quicker. You kinda stretch and contract
at the same time, if that makes any sense. Really, it feels like regular
leg lifts/kicks and crunches but looks a little more graceful IMO. I got
sold on the whole long, lean ballerina figure BS they spewed on the
infomercial, which is probably wishful thinking, but my muscles are firming
up nice so I'm happy with it. :o)

  9. I always thought Pilates was just using that "sliding backboard" machine
(my father in law an MD, has one of those, got it for his bad back, so
    far, no good... ;-)

Personally, I walk 3 miles every other day, which I have been doing for
about 4 months. Real PITA in bad weather though, and I've been bugged
by idiot's dogs on several occasions, so I'm thinking of getting a
stationary bike, which I have used in the past with success. The
advantage to me of exercising at home is the convenience time/weather
wise, & you can do it while reading/listening to music/watching TV (at
least with a bike) which cuts the boredom. I've also used a rowing
machine at a gym, a terrific workout, but I don't know if you can get a
decent one at a "home machine" price.

    much else.

    So, what do you do?

My default exercise is not owning a car, so I get a certain amount of
exercise whether I want to or not (since I'm usually late, it's got an
    aerobic benefit as well).

In addition to that, in order of preference, swimming in the summer or
when I'm someplace that is an option - I'm not particularly fast, but I
really do swim and keep it up usually for an hour, and the elliptical
which I'm finding I really enjoy and can get in a really good workout in
an hour. I'll use a treadmill if for some reason I want to stick to fast
walking (like Luna, I can't run properly on the treadmill) or to change
things up a bit. For some reason, I have a down on the exercise bikes. I
don't really understand it, I have huge, sturdy thigh muscles, and yet I
spend 5 minutes on a bike and my thighs file a suit for seperate
    maintenance.

I used to do most of my work on the weight machines, but for some reason I
just haven't been able to get back into that in any consistent way.
Perhaps it's simply that the elliptical is more fun since I can listen to
music while I do it and definitely feel like I've had a workout when I'm
done. By contrast, sometimes with the weights, I don't *really* feel it
until a day or two later at which point I discover that walking down
    stairs is unexpectedly challenging. <g>

One thing I haven't been using is the rowing machines (for those of you
wondering - we have a small fitness center in the basement of my co-op,
I've seen more people in it in the last 2 weeks than in the 9 months
before, but even so it's never crowded. Since it's right downstairs, I
find that I do pretty well at making myself go at least 5 times a week). I
should try them as I'm sure they'll engage a bunch of muscles I'm not
    working much now.

One thing that I am not finding to contribute to my calorie burning or my
level of fitness - I saw an article about the Masai Barefoot
Technology shoes (MBT). The come on was that just wearing them for day to
day walking around would essentially cause one to walk harder - thereby
burning more calories and strengthening the muscles in the process. It
wasn't exactly a something for nothing promise - the idea was that walking
in these sneakers was actually more work than in regular shoes - but I
should have been suspicious from the fact that they touted the associated
loss of fat from the thighs (repeat after me - spot reduction does not
work) and that it would lessen cellulite. Hell, lipo can't do that, is it
really likely a pair of sneakers will?

After wearing them full time for about a week (including an hour long
brisk walk on the treadmill to work on the gait repatterning and using
them for my elliptical workouts since) I can't honestly say that I feel
like I'm working harder when I walk in them and I definitely don't have
any feeling that my leg muscles are getting a taxing workout from them.
I'd like to believe that that is because, given my existing high state of
fitness <snort>, that they just don't make all that much difference, but
    even I find that improbable.

They do seem to be good at loosening up the lower back, and I do feel like
I'm engaging my abdominal muscles as a result of the posture changes the
shoes encourage. So, I'll keep wearing them until the wear out (apparently
they're not all that durable), but I'm not looking at it as a valuable
    adjunct to my workout schedule.

Thats about it for fitness for me.

I cycle, walk, jog and run. I also swim, play competitive badminton,
and some tennis. I also like bowling. I go and shoot hoops for an hour
while listening to my ipod. I chase my cats around the house
(they love it!). Anything to get me out of my chair, basically.

I got the 3 Windsor Pilates CDs that are available in the UK a few months
ago. There's an introduction one that teaches you good form, a 20 min
workout one, and an advanced 60 min workout. I think they're very good -
I've been doing the 20 min version, with the occasional 60 min one, 3 times
a week, and I definitely feel toned! They show you both easier and more
advanced ways to do each exercise, so you can tailor it to where you are.
I've decided I need more cardio, though, to shake up a long stall, so I'm
dropping 2 of my workouts in favour of skipping - jump rope to you guys? I'm
definitely going to keep up the pilates once a week, though, just to keep
    the mobility.

Apart from that, I walk the 10,000 steps, and weightlift 3 days a week.

  17. Have you all seen those Dance Dance Revolution machines that are in arcades
or bowling alleys, etc? My husband and I love to play them. We have a few
times, even though we're terrible at it, it's a lot of fun. Well, I found a
home version of it, and now have a dance pad that plugs into my tv (they
also make them for Playstation or Xbox, and those versions are much better).
    Anyway, I love it!
I got the cheapo knockoff with really lousy graphics and the sound quality
is also bad - but it's hilarious. It's a fantastic workout, but something I
really want to do. The other morning, I was all ready for work and had 10
minutes to spare, so I decided to plug it in and play some more, because
it's like a game. I never would have used an extra 10 minutes on my
elliptical machine, etc. just for fun. The first several nights I had it,
as soon as I came home from worked I plugged it in and eagerly tapped my
feet on the arrows to try and beat my last score. I'll use it for 10 to 30
minutes at a time, and my legs feel like jelly. I've also already noticed
that my pants are getting larger! I've only had this for 2 weeks, but my
    thighs are absolutely shrinking.

So I've been wanting to post about it as a fun way to mix gaming with
exercise, in a way that really doesn't seem like exercise while you're doing
    it.

  18. I have been on a low carb diet for a year now. I lost 50+ pounds in the
first 4-5 months and have been just maintaining for the rest of the time. In
March I will have been participating in a circuit training class at a local
recreation center. That is cardio and resistance weight machines alternating
for a hour. Recently I have added Dance Dance Revolution to my work out
schedule. I jogged/walked a 10K race last Memorial Day and play on doing it
again this year. I have not felt this good in alot of years. I have a very
sedentary job that really helped put on the pounds in the last 9
years........I am very happy to be feeling great.

    Currently I'm not doing anything.

The model I got was http://www.ddrgame.com/dadareddrtvp.html
which is still on sale for $29.99 + shipping

My favorite song I dance to on it is Michael Jackson's "Beat It" because I
love the beat to that song.

You could also try looking for used dance pads on ebay. The x-box &
playstation versions are MUCH better. However, the tv version I got has
been more than enough to keep me happily addicted so far. Oh! It also has a
game of whack-a-mole on there, but you have to stomp on the mole's head with
your feet! That's fun. And it has a pinball game, but you move the paddles
with your feet instead of your hands like on a normal game. The pinball
game on there actually impressed me with the multi levels and fun things it
does. We had guests over and the 4 of us were playing whack a mole taking
turns to see who could get the highest score - we all ended up winded after
playing, but we didn't want to stop because it was so much fun.

It plugs straight into my tv, that is all. It uses 4 AA batteries for
    power.
