    Who's PS?

He's a full time road safety campaigner, which I think basically means he's
scrounging off the state. His site wwwdotsafespeeddotorg tries to present
itself as reminding drivers that the speed limit is not necessarily a safe
limit, and one must often go slower; and that speed cameras are evil.

In reality, his agenda is to get speed cameras removed and speed limits
relaxed, so that he can drive around at the "safe speed" of whatever he
    feels is "safe".

He is notorious here after unsuccessfully arguing that reducing speed
limits to 12mph wouldn't make any difference to KSIs.

Be fair, that should be "after unsuccessfully arguing that reducing speed
limits to 12mph wouldn't make any difference to KSIs in a hypothetical
situation he said bore no relation reality, making you wonder why he'd
bothered". (He claimed that if you dropped the speed limit to 12mph _and
drivers then no longer ever used their brakes in accidents_ the KSI would
be the same as it is now.)

He also tried to argue - seriously - that driving faster was better cos
it meant you would be on the road for less time and therefore have less
chance of running into a hazard. He is a prize [censored] of the highest order.

Did he not also argue that people would have passed the dangerous
    situation before it became dangerous?

Are you the hairy coconut on the bottom right?

If I had any decent ones of me on a bike, they'd have gone up, but as I
didn't I had to make do. I seem to have lots of me swimming though, so that
    one was the one.

That account of your trip up High Street had excellent pictures, though.
I've got an SLR to mend and once that's done, the next big trip I take I'll
have it with me and take inspiration.

Absolutely. "Be fair" wasn't entirely serious, hence the "making you
wonder why he'd bothered" (and he was still wrong as well as being
irrelevent even if he had been right).

He also thinks that automated enforcement of speed limits is bad in part
because drivers spend to much time concentrating on the speedometer.

Evidence suggests that drivers need no speedometers to distract them
from the task in hand. Interestingly, only the speedometer is singled
out as a distraction - presumably Smith's car doesn't have mirrors,
in-car entertainment or any other instruments.

I noted also the link elsewhere in the thread:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/4254623.stm - it has a box
for iCan: "Speed cameras - Information and contacts to help you take
action". Somehow I doubt that "take action" in this case involves
    slowing down...

A latest outburst has him say that 'it scares the hell out of him' that
nearly 70% of drivers are now more aware of speed limits than they were
two years ago (a survey carried out in Hampshire & IOW in Sept/Oct 2004).
Apparently according to Sm*thLaw they now have less attention for the
    road ahead.

I agree that the logic is flawed here, but it is strangely consistent
with the view that when comparing casualties of cyclists with
casualties of motorists, the 'per hour exposure' rate is more
appropriate than the 'per mile travelled'.

You're not supposed to try fording when it's that deep. It isn't good
    for the bottom-bracket bearing.

I've done it on other people's bikes, and even spectated while a friend did
    it in the sea.

It was a followup to my (OT rambling) post about the etymology of
"scot-free". It is at least in the correct thread and not appearing as a
new post, but not really threaded very well.
