Or is it having talent, as Lance appears to suggest?
I misread Lance, and he thinks that being
competitive just means you want to go out there and kick some ass.

you're so wrong tony. imo a competitive runner in the context of
racing to some reasonable measure prepares & positions themself to have
an optimum performance on race day with a sense of awareness of the
field. it's not connected to age or times.
Nothing wrong with being wrong as long as you learn something new. What led
me to speculate that you associate competitiveness with talent was your
numerous statements that trail runners are mainly running trail races to
avoid the competition of road races.
Quoted message said:donovan repeatedly characterizes me as an under-achiever as a runner
(despite some respectable times). he does this because he knows i
don't prepare & position myself to have an optimum performance on race
day. i don't train for races, i drink wine the night before a race,
and basically i just show up and perform the best i can on race day
(i'm a race rat much more than a competitive runner).
Hey I admire rats in that they're great creatures of adaptation and survival
😉
Quoted message said:your mindset's too simple tony...you have to expand it a bit if you
want any real sense or notion to properly characterize my approach to
running & racing. i can join any new york city running club / racing
team tomorrow. when healthy i race more than most racing team
runners. i'm not interested, as shocking and difficult this may be
for you to believe, i am not a competitive runner.
My simple-minded speculation has at least gotten you to state your views. So
now though you're admittedly not a competitive runner, you could be called a
spirited competitor when you do race.
Quoted message said:for example, when trailrunner boast how he ran two 50K ultras on
consecutive weekends, all he's really doing is saying he is not a
competitive runner. last year i ran two Half-Marathons spaced 5 days
apart. Competitive runners don't do that Tony. I am not a
competitive runner.
How do you know trailrunner doesn't choose one race every year to try to
peak for? That one does interim races he doesn't peak for doesn't
necessarily make him non-competitive, as you suggest. I suspect a great deal
of trail runners choose one or two races to peak for every year and target
their training for that. Others may be race rats like admittedly are.
