Just to follow up, I bought a pair of Sealskinz socks. Just got back
from splashing and slipping around my local woods, and even though the
bike, my shoes and the rest of me were a uniform muddy colour, my feet
stayed dry. I hate wet feet!

Thanks for the recommendations.

I didn't fare quite so well with mine (although it was probably my own
fault). Went out for an 11 mile run on a new riverside path.
Unfortunatelty torrential rain meant that parts of the path were underwater.
The socks worked well until I water went over the top and filled them up.
After that, they had a tendancy to "ride up" my foot stretching the toe end
of the sock hard over my toes. When I got home I found that the inner layer
had worn right through to the waterproof membrane over my toenails.

As expensive reminder to keep my toenails short!

TBH,I bought them to stop water/mud from the front wheel landing on my
shoes from soaking through to my feet. If I was expecting to get soaked
from above, I would have my overshoes with me!
