Concur I'm still a HUGE fan of the 1911. I own one and "ship" it with me whenever circumstances warrant. Ma deuce and the 1911 both continue to generate a huge fan club. Tried and true. Nothing fancy. I had a Glock 9 mil for awhile but extractor problems and double feeds put that thing back in the armory. Plus..... I just don't like dark black plastic.
As for lions vs. dog? Never been around lions but I doubt I'd shoot one unless it wouldn't go away.

The airhorn might be more effective on a Bear or Lion than a 9mm, I wouldn't want to face one in a life or death situation with anything less than a 44 Magnum. The 9mm will be just fine on the "local stalker", unless he has just visited his personal drug dealer, then it even may be borderline. I have a 9mm, 38 Special, & 380 Auto, I've carried them all on by bicycle, I personally prefer the 38 Special Revolver because of it's light weight, small size and dependability, but don't expect to ever run into hard core drug users or gang members where I ride.

Glocks are decent weapons but, in my experience, they have some drawbacks. It's not known for it's accuracy (you can't adjust it) and I'm not a fan of long pull double actions. Their half [censored] safety feature makes me nervous. If I was looking for a lightweight weapon to put into a back pack though? An H&K USP40 (.40 cal) would take care of most 2 or 4-legged varmints. You're not going to drive any nails with it but it's reliable and pretty durable.
If I was going to keep a weapon around the house to take care of critters it would more likely be a 12-gauge pump gun loaded with 00 buck.

that'll work mate! cool beans. generally, those cats are looking for rabbits and other small game. noise, lights, and smell keep them away. A deer is a tall order for a couger. But they can take them down. A young buck may be a tall order....

Hopefully the mtn lions in CO aren't as brave as they are here in CA. In two recent attacks, the person wasn't alone and the other person had to put up a pretty good fight till the cat finally got tied of their [censored] and let go. If it was really hungry, I don't think they would be a damn thing you or I could do -- those things are pure muscle and they have some nasty teeth. I thought it was interesting also. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about wildlife management. I do have a knee jerk aversion to trophy hunting of large predators so its good to be exposed to reasonable arguments from all perspectives.
