My personal favorite.
I can't believe how light the thing is. I was a pretty good shot with a .38, a marksman at 150 yards with a .22 rifle (my dad taught me when I was 8), but the glock is like shooting a sniper rifle. Leave it to the Germans to come up with a well engineered protector.
Glocks are such pieces of [censored]. Disco plastic [censored] for disco dumbasses.

I actually bought it (my first weapon) to protect the dogs at night from the mountain lions who make there way down from the park every now and then (so I've been told).
If you shoot a lion, I hope they lock you up and throw away the key. If you shoot a lion and get away with it, don't ever show your face around me.

Concur I'm still a HUGE fan of the 1911. I own one and "ship" it with me whenever circumstances warrant. Ma deuce and the 1911 both continue to generate a huge fan club. Tried and true. Nothing fancy. I had a Glock 9 mil for awhile but extractor problems and double feeds put that thing back in the armory. Plus..... I just don't like dark black plastic.
As for lions vs. dog? Never been around lions but I doubt I'd shoot one unless it wouldn't go away.

I don't mind the plastic and I don't have to use it in the line of fire, so it's good for me. As for the shooting the lion, I would certainly fore off a warning shot first.

An air horn probably would have been a much safer choice, more effective
since you'd probably be shaking so much you wouldn't hit the cat anyway or worse, hitting the dog you're trying to protect. Fear/panic adrenaline = crazy stuff. A lot different than shooting at a target. Ask any police officer that's unloaded his glock during a panic situation.....and didn't hit the target 50 feet away (or in some cases.....many officers riddling the target full of holes but still missing most of their shots).
Gary (come on down, the weather's beautiful. Probably riding MMP today)
The airhorn might be more effective on a Bear or Lion than a 9mm, I wouldn't want to face one in a life or death situation with anything less than a 44 Magnum. The 9mm will be just fine on the "local stalker", unless he has just visited his personal drug dealer, then it even may be borderline. I have a 9mm, 38 Special, & 380 Auto, I've carried them all on by bicycle, I personally prefer the 38 Special Revolver because of it's light weight, small size and dependability, but don't expect to ever run into hard core drug users or gang members where I ride.
As for the shooting the lion, I would certainly fore off a warning shot first.
So let me get this straight: you're going to be wandering around in your back yard in the dark firing off "warning shots" at wild animals menacing your dog?
I have no idea why the locals think newcomers to the Front Range are idiots.

Don't read so much into it. It doesn't happen that often and the most recent attacks were further north near RMNP.
Sheesh. By a little gun and everyone goes crazy.
Additionally, I'm in a pretty secluded area and my backyard is a friggin' mountain.

You still don't get it. When your backyard is "friggin' mountain" you don't go out and shoot all the animals you don't like. You are in their yard. If they eat Fifi, so be it.

No, you don't get it. It's called protection. In NJ it would be from the animal that wants to pray on my property and family. In Colorado it's the animal that wants to pray on my property and family. I don't give a sh!t if the animal is a meth addict, big cat, or a f!cking mosquito.
My family includes my pets as well, whether or not you agree. If you don't like it, stay in Connecticut. For the one in a million chance I'll need to use it, I'll have it. I'm not going out [censored] nilly shooting everything in sight.
I guess we just don't see eye to eye. Oh, well. I can live with that.

RAL,
Glocks are decent weapons but, in my experience, they have some drawbacks. It's not known for it's accuracy (you can't adjust it) and I'm not a fan of long pull double actions. Their half [censored] safety feature makes me nervous. If I was looking for a lightweight weapon to put into a back pack though? An H&K USP40 (.40 cal) would take care of most 2 or 4-legged varmints. You're not going to drive any nails with it but it's reliable and pretty durable.
If I was going to keep a weapon around the house to take care of critters it would more likely be a 12-gauge pump gun loaded with 00 buck.

I've still got my Ruger Security Six 357. Yep it's a wheel gun, but is a solid weapon after all these years. Not prone to jam... :-)
I agree, leave the animals alone. Usually they're spooked by your scent or noise anyways. But, if it comes down to your life on the line, then that's different. The big cats will run away, almost always. Just keep the doggies inside at night, or go out with them when they need to do their business. All is fine.
That is the plan. I'm even having the builder put a couple of big floodlights out back.

that'll work mate! cool beans. generally, those cats are looking for rabbits and other small game. noise, lights, and smell keep them away. A deer is a tall order for a couger. But they can take them down. A young buck may be a tall order....

Hopefully the mtn lions in CO aren't as brave as they are here in CA. In two recent attacks, the person wasn't alone and the other person had to put up a pretty good fight till the cat finally got tied of their [censored] and let go. If it was really hungry, I don't think they would be a damn thing you or I could do -- those things are pure muscle and they have some nasty teeth. And in both of these attacks, the kitty went straight for the head, too. http://tchester.org/sgm/lists/lion_attacks_ca.html
I agree that they are beautiful. I think CA has a different problem as many of the attacks are during the day. Fortunately there's enough deer and elk here for them to be happy and I doubt I will ever have a problem. In my searches, it likes like about two dog kills a year are reported.

Interesting article, thanks. Looks like I had a misconception, too, that they were endangered; I didn't even think about the possibility of over crowding.

I thought it was interesting also. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about wildlife management. I do have a knee jerk aversion to trophy hunting of large predators so its good to be exposed to reasonable arguments from all perspectives.

I used to paint houses and there was a GC we used to do a lot of work for. There was a few occasions I had to go over to house to pick up something from his home office. Everytime I walked into his office I wanted to kick his ass -- there wasn't on wall or corner of the room that wasn't filled with stuffed animals. What made it worse was he was a Christian brother and it just [censored] me off to no end that he couldn't understand that he was disrespecting God's creation and thereby dishonoring God.
Good thing we never got so mad at each other it came down to throwing punches -- he was pretty big and probably would've killed me. -- Slack

Yeah, a little light pollution goes such a long way.
How can you be paranoid if the animals are out to get you?
Funny how Coloradans rag on texans and Californians when some of the most offensive and clueless dumbasses to move to CO are some a them damn yankees.

I wouldn't expect Mitch to be able to handle a 12 guage with 00. Howzabout a 410 with #4?
