Depends on what kind of vegetarian and where you live?
You might need a little milk or eggs to supplement the missing animal
    components.
Humans are 'designed' to eat animal/insect products - they produce a
powerful acid and various enzymes for digesting animal proteins.
    Anth

Humans were not designed to eat animals/insects in the beginning.

    Do you know 'ironjustice'?

Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the
face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a
tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat." Genesis 1:29.

"Thou shall eat the herb of the field." Genesis 3:18

    An explanation.

We believe that "In the beginning God created ... man and woman." We
also believe that when God created us that He made us unique, with the
freedom to choose. And yet how could we choose without gaining
information. He gave us the information we needed to choose wisely,
unfortunately, throughout history, we have a reputation of
disregarding God's wisdom and instead following our own foolish ideas.
This is in regard to whom we would follow right down the line to what
would be important to us. This included what we would eat, drink and
how we would live. God told us to eat the "seed-bearing plant on the
face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in
it", Genesis 1:29, in other words, fruits, seeds, nuts and grains. (By
the way, He gave the green plants for the animals to eat.) We were to
eat in addition the fruit from the tree of life. From these foods, we
would receive all the nourishment we would need to live forever. After
the fall, however, we would no longer have access to the tree of life,
and thus would no longer live forever. At that time God told us to add
to our diet the plants of the field, greens, vegetables, Genesis 3:18.
This addition would replace the necessary nutrients, needed for a
healthy body, (not an everlasting one),that we would no longer be
receiving from the tree of life.. On this diet, man lived to an
average age of 912 years without a single recorded instance of
sickness! It was not until after the flood, when man had grown so
wicked that God regretted creating man and so destroyed the earth,
that God gave permission for man to eat certain meats that were to be
prepared in certain ways. In less that 10 generations on this type of
lifestyle, man's average age went from 912 to 100 years of age. Today
that average is about 70! What we are encouraging is for us to return
to the lifestyle God originally told us to follow for good health. In
so doing, we believe that we can give our bodies the nutrients that
God created us as needing, in order to rebuild our much depleted
immune system and also to build healthy cells for a healthier body.

I believe ths explanation to be correct.

There will be naysayers who will say it is sales hype.

I say it's just total nonsense.

    Not surprised.

    It comes from the bible.

    Jan,

So what do you have to say about Paul's advice to
Timothy in his first letter, the beginning of chapter
    four?

    marvin

    Hi Marvin,

To answer that correctly I would need my commentary and I don't have it with
    me.

I quoted God;s original plan. Here is another good explanation.

One of the first things that we must recognize is that God created food. He
created all of the plants and all of the animals that we find on our earth
today. However, not all plants and animals were designed by God to be used as
food. God's word is quite clear regarding this. In Genesis 120-30, God tells us
that He has given us every seed bearing plant and every tree that has fruit
with seed in it. He also tells us that he gives all of the animals he created
every green plant for food. God did not plan for us to eat meat in the
    beginning.

Before the great flood, man's diet consisted of plants. Before the flood, God
spoke to Noah and told him to take with him into the ark seven of every kind of
clean animal, being sure to take a male and a female, and two of every kind of
unclean animal, a male and a female. After the flood, God once again spoke to
us concerning what we should eat. In Genesis 93-4, He tells us that everything
that lives and moves will be for our food, just as he gave us the green plants.
However, he cautions us to not eat meat that has lifeblood still in it. Further
on in God's word, he gives us advice concerning these clean and unclean
animals. In Leviticus 11, God tells us that the clean animals were to be used
for food and the unclean animals were not to be used as food.

Recent medical research has shown that this is healthy advice. The animals that
God considered unclean, were mostly scavenger type animals. They very often did
and still do carry diseases. While the clean animals and plants that God gave
us for food have been showing up on more and more nutritional guidelines as
"healing" foods or "preventive medicine" foods.

What does God consider a clean and unclean animal? God's word is clear on this
as well, In Leviticus 11 verses 3 and 9 he tells us that we should animals that
have a split hoof completely divided and chews the cud, or creatures of the sea
that have fins and scales. He goes on in Leviticus 11 verses 4,6,7, and 9 to
tell us exactly what animals we should not eat. Animals that chew the cud but
do not have a split hoof, rabbits, pigs, and any creature of the sea that does
not have fins and scales. Please read the 11th chapter of Leviticus in your own
Bible to obtain more knowledge in this area.

  8. Jan,

Well, now you have a completely different subject.
You first post, to which I replied and you had no
answer, was about eating no meat whatsoever, if I
remember correctly. Now you refer to the types of
animals that can be eaten. I agree with this viewpoint
that some types of animals are less hazardous to health
than others. However, I am also concerned that the way
otherwise healthy animals are raised in modern society
makes them also questionable. I have nothing against
eating meat of any kind from a spiritual perspective,
as supported by Paul, but from a natural health
perspective I avoid most of it when I can get something
    better.

Article by Deborah Churchman found in my son's Ranger Rick magazine
from the National Wildlife Federation, December 1998 issue.
    Offered by Pat.
    They Eat What?
.... dragonflies are delicious. She lives in Bali, an island in the
Pacific Ocean. But why, you may ask, would anyone eat insects? Because
the little flying buggers make a high-protein meal. And they're free
for the catching! People in Bali go "fly fishing" with strips of
palmwood. First they dip the strips in sticky sap. Next, they run
through the rice fields, waving their sticky sticks. Dragonflies hit
the sticks and get glued. Then the people fry the insects in coconut
oil- and eat them like candy. Dragonflies don't look yummy to you? ...

This Cambodian woman is about to have a spider inside her. She's
eating a fried tarantula - a popular treat in her Southeast Asian
country. How'd you like to have that between your teeth?

    What A Mouthful!
Indonesian children ... usually eat taro and yams, potato-like tubers.
The tubers have lots of vitamins and carbohydrates but not much
protein. So for a high protein snack, these kids hunt stinkbugs. For
real. They look for the bugs along forest trails. There, big kids
climb trees to catch them. The big kids then hand the bugs down to
younger children. To cook their catch, the kids stuff the bugs into
bags made of leaves. Then they toss the bags into a fire. How do the
bugs taste? One American said, "They were better than some worms I've
tried." People in Indonesia eat other creepy crawlies as well,
including the grubs .... They say they're chewy and taste like bacon.

    Good 'N' Gooshy
People in Botswana (a country in southern Africa) eat mopane worms for
the same reason that people in the United States eat hamburger - to
get lots of protein. But mopane worms have three times as much protein
as beef. The worms are really caterpillars of one of the largest moths
in the world. Here's a tip: Don't eat the caterpillars when they're
young and little. They're yucky then. Wait until they've fattened up
on the leaves of mopane trees. The next step is to squeeze the guts
out of the caterpillars. ... The guts are filled with a yellow-green
slimy mess that smells like ground-up leaves. Then the caterpillars
are boiled in salt water ... and spread out to dry. Dried worms last
for many months. The worms taste like beef bits with a woody flavor.

    And Now For Dessert!
Got a sweet tooth? How would you like a mealworm lollipop? Or a
chocolate-covered cricket? What's that you say - you'd rather not eat
these? Well, how about a candied apple covered with mealworms? Doesn't
look yummy? You can find these insect candies in the United States.
Some candy companies here have figured out what people in many other
countries already know - insects make great food. Many insects are
good-tasting and high in protein. Honey ants, for example, are sweet
treats. Fried grasshoppers and crickets taste something like fried
shrimp. Fried mealworms taste like pretzels that were once alive. And
    leaf-footed bugs are fruity.

Insects are also easy to find and free for the taking. So they're good
food for people who don't have much money. Does this mean you should
eat every insect you can catch? Well, no- some of them taste really
bad, and some can make you sick. But you may want to think again about
what is and is not OK to eat. And if you see someone munching on an
insect- try not to let it bug you.

Based on the book, Man Eating Bugs: The Art and Science of Eating
Insects by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio (A Material World Book,
    Ten Speed Press, Berkley, 1998)

You first post, to which I replied and you had no
answer, was about eating no meat whatsoever, if I
    remember correctly.

    You must have misunderstood.

    Here is what I stated:

Humans were not designed to eat animals/insects in the beginning.

    That is religious insanity.

Happy shows his insanity in every post.

The short answer is "YES". A strict vegetarian is
probably not getting enough vitamin B. However, there
are some (not necessarily the majority) of vegetarians
and even vegans who maintain good health for a long
life without supplements. My guess, is that it has
something to do with genetic makeup, or perhaps
something else in their environment that compensates.

Actually, it's only vitamin B-12, and not the rest
of the B vitamins (or any other vitamins.)

And "vegetarians" do not need to be concerned
    with B-12, only "vegans" do.

There have been apparently some cases of B-12
    deficiency known in the past.

Modern day vegan food articles, e.g. soymilk,
typically contain added B-12, so this is
not a serious issue for anyone wanting
    to be vegan or vegetarian.

The serious issue is being able to stay
on the diet. Well intentioned people are
often not able to stay vegetarian, due
to lack of knowledge of what to eat.

Innovative cooking is really the best solution.
Chinese and Indian styles of cooking are
suitable for adapting to the vegan diet. Tofu
can be used in many Chinese recipes in place
of chicken or duck, and in place of Cheese (paneer)
in Indian cooking. Tacos also do well with
tofu -- anything where meat is not the main
source of flavor, but vegetables/spices are.

Also, note that soy-milk at first tastes rather
horrible. This is because of some sort of adaptation.
I am not sure what's involved, but if you stick to
it for a while, it starts tasting normal and it's
cow's milk that starts to taste awful (in fact, you
start noticing a particular smell in cow's milk, kind
of like a body odor), and soy-milk starts to taste clean.
(Experimenting with different brands is probably
    a good idea too.)

Another thing is the new vegan "meats", "mock chicken",
vegan "cream cheese", vegan "soy milk" products etc. Some
are not very good, some are. Often you need to get
creative with these. The vegan "hot dogs" are awful
as hot dogs, but slice and fry them, and they
are a treat. In general, don't expect that the
vegan "beef" will replace your steak or hamburger.
Just be prepared to encounter novelty, and to work
with variations/combinations until it tastes good to you.

Also, these vegan "meats" tend to be on the expensive
side, but that will probably change as more
people start buying them. The situation has already changed
astronomically in the last decade or two.

Yes. It is very difficult to get enough Vitamin B-12 from a
    vegan (pure vegetarian) diet.

Vitamin B12 is found in all animal products (liver, muscle flesh,
eggs, and dairy products are sources, in order from richest to
    poorest sources).

The typical terminology among vegetarians is:

Vegetarian: Does not eat animal flesh.

Lacto-Ovo Vegetarian: Eggs, milk, honey ok.
Lacto Vegetarian: No eggs. Milk ok, honey ok.
Vegan: Does not eat any animal products. No eggs, milk or honey.

Commercial B-12 for vegans is derived from bacterial sources
these days. In earlier days it probably came simply from
bacteria on fruits and veg... But in the US most of the
bacteria are killed by the farming methods, and cases of
B-12 deficiency did occur among vegans in the US.

Veganism is very modern, historical vegetarianism (e.g.
among Buddhists/Hindus) did not stop milk/honey, so
long term cultural data on veganism does not exist.

  16. Agreed, there's overwhelming evidence to say that a vegetarian diet is
    deficient in it.
Good sources are milk meat cheese eggs etc.

The bacteria are not repostitories of B-12. The bacteria can produce
B-12. This leads us to the conclusion that no creature can make its
own B-12. The B-12 must be made by bacteria and the creature must eat
food containing the B-12 on it ( not in it ). The most obvious souce
of B-12 is then [censored]!! I have a hard time believing that I need a
daily ration of feces in order to get my B-12.

The B-12 question is one that needs to be answered completely.
Certainly we can all agree that Cobalt and bacteria are required. The
human stomach produces "intrinsic factor" to bind with B-12 which can
then be absorbed in the ileum of the small intestine. The bacteria in
the digestive tract, provided there is Cobalt in the dietary, will
produce even more B-12 which will show up in the feces. One question
is why the colon would not reabsorb B-12 if needed since there is an
    excess in the stool.
