I am so surprised that the vegetarian and vegan NGs on usenet seem so
dead. I just became a vegetarian fairly recently and was looking for an
active discussion forum.

Not many people take that route. Sooner or later they miss a juicy
hamburger or friend chicken leg. I myself love fruit and veggies but I also
like to see a nice breaded baked porkchop on my plate as well. :-)

When businesses invoke the "protection of consumers," it's a lot like
politicians invoking morality and children - grab your wallet and/or
your kid and run for your life. -

Keep the generalizations out of it, please. It's been my experience
that folks who switch to a vegetarian diet seldom 'miss' eating meat. I
could very easily transition my family over to ovolacto-vegetarianism -
and we're already very close - and none of us would miss what little
meat we eat. My husband used to be a 'steak and potatoes' man until
he got serious about running, then he stopped eating red meat entirely
with no regrets.
I know plenty of people who have gone ovolacto or even vegan, and they
don't regret it for a moment. They are healthier and have more energy
than they did when they were still had the 'meat and potatoes'
mentality.Kimmer

"It takes effort to be a well nourished vegetarian" is the way I'd put
it. Once a person educates themselves about a good vegetarian diet &
takes the time to shop for the foods (& prepare them) that make up
such a diet, it's not a Herculean task. Of course, the reasons
motivating the person's vegetarianism make a big difference in whether
or not they find it difficult to adhere to. [I'd be willing to bet
that someone whose spiritual or moral beliefs mandate a meatless diet
would find doing so less of a chore than someone doing it simply
because their significant other wants them to.] -

once before, but didn't last, because (I now realize) I wasn't doing it
right. A vegetarian diet isn't satisfying and healthful unless you lay
off of the junk food, and emphasize high-fiber, high-nutrition foods.Quoted message said:

boards or NGs.That's true. I was on a high protein, low carb diet, before I abandoned
meat completely. The more research I did, the more I realized that the
whole high-protein thing is a flawed idea. For one thing, too much
protein is not good for you. For another thing, it's not really a
healthy diet if you can't eat fruit. -
Hi
I am vegetarian (lacto ovo) and I feel fine, have done for many years now
(18 years?)
As for the [censored] about meat etc - it's all lies - I used to actively do a
lot of high cardio sports,
(karate kung fu etc) and recently (some heart charity) had their wagons out
in the streets, testing people.
The woman was shocked at my heart rate and wanted to know why it was so low.
She asked me if I did sports, which I told her yes I did.

I did not generalize. I said, 'in my experience', meaning only the cases
I know. Hardly applies universally. You stop generalizing based on your experiences, okay? Your claim that,
and I quote, "Sooner or later they miss a juicy hamburger or friend
(good spelling error, BTW) chicken leg.", does not apply to all, as my
experience indicates otherwise.Quoted message said:

I didn't generalize. I even said 'in my experience', indicating that
it's not a universal statement. The people I know did not miss meat,
and the ones who did early morning workouts said that they noticed right
away that they didn't have a heavy feeling in their stomachs that they
had after eating a dinner containing meat. Again, just in my
experience.Quoted message said:

Excuse me. Again, I wasn't the one who made the sweeping claim that, and
I quote from your post, "Sooner or later they miss a juicy
hamburger or friend chicken leg. " I am being specific. I even stated
'in my experience' to show that this does not apply to the rest of the
world, just the many people I have known who have changed to a
vegetarian diet and have not gone back.Latest recommendations are that everyone, no matter what diet one
follows, should take a good multivitamin every day. Vegetarianism done
properly, with education and planning, can make people healthier than
their previous diets. Again, just in my experience.Quoted message said:

I'd rather not, as I have no desire to do the so-called 'low carb'
thing. Yes, I know these people make these claims, and that's all well
and good if it works for them. I did see, however, a long-term study
showing that the weight doesn't stay off in the long run. The big thing
in weight loss is taking in fewer calories than one uses every day.
Common sense, that. I know that the so-called 'low carb' diet would not
work for me; I tried something like this years ago and gained weight as
a result. I would be generalizing is I claimed that low-carb diets
won't work for everyone just because they don't work for me, but I would
never say that. I know people who have had great success with Atkins
and others who have not. Not everyone has the same metabolism, and some
will be able to process high-protein diets better than others. Fine and
dandy. To each their own. I will just keep doing what I've been doing to
lose weight in a slow and sensible manner to keep it off for longer. 25
pounds down and going strong, on a mostly vegetarian diet, too.Kimmer

I was a vegetarian in college, for about two years, in the early '70s.
The smell of bacon was soooo good.
I still am not a big meat person. Prime rib really turns me off.
