But, you have to give him credit. He is very good at what he does. .

which people completing a triathlon are triathletes?

So Dally is a "triathlete" because that is the latest thing she wants
to be, and because that is now how she describes herself.

I agree that actions need to back it up. So do you think training six
days a week for the sport for seven months would qualify as actions? How
about showing up and competing in a sanctioned event? How about showing
up and competing in two sanctioned events? At what point does the term
of art apply to that person more so than your starboard testicle?

How about finishing in the top half?!

I personally had some quibbles with the people I saw walking the run who

earlier, but it looked somewhat less than the effort I was putting into
it and felt kind of squeamish at they're being called triathletes, too.

Well, if you saw them while you were still racing then they're roughly as fast
as you, don't quibble too hard. I walk through the water stops, drinking and
    pouring water over my head.

    Quoted message said:

So I see what you mean. But I think that comes back to putting actions
behind the words. I'm not a triathlete because I said so, or even
because I showed up one Sunday morning. I'm a triathlete because I've
been training assiduously in three sports for the better part of a year
now and I show up day after day, week after week, month after month and
work on my sport and, as a consequence, I can do it.

You asked once if your scorn motivated me. Yes, it motivated me to
leave MFW. This [censored] just brings me down. I'm doing an absolutely
fantastic job of integrating challenges into my life and then MEETING them.

    Yes you are.

Fix your hip and you'll be even better. Way to go, Dally.

Thanks, T. I had a startle this morning when I went to my training log
and it was utterly blank. What the hell, I've been working my butt off!
But it was a fresh month, a clean slate, and utterly empty. It was a
clear reminder that I can't just rest on my laurels, what I did
    yesterday doesn't matter anymore.

I think I'll go for a swim at noon.

    Dally

The bike is the Big Thing in the triathlon, the biggest temporal chunk, big as
or bigger than the run and the swim (maybe even and the transitions) put
    together, right?

I really don't want to quibble too hard, but I'm talking about people
younger than me that I saw after I finished, cooled down, had a snack,
and went to find friends and we watched more people come in that I had
this thought. But I don't know their context and I don't want to
diminish their accomplishment. I saw one finisher there holding what
looked like a newborn baby, for example.

It had wave starts, I was in wave 8 of 20 so there were half an hour
head starts over me on the run and I certainly saw people walking, but
the all seemed to be making an effort at that point: the second wave
were cancer survivors, and the wave after that was the 65+ wave, then
the 60-64, etc. I don't begrudge them their "triathlete" status if they
show up and move [slowly] through all those events. They've got bodies
that still work and they know how to value that. It was pretty
    inspiring, actually.

which people completing a triathlon are triathletes?

We have been through all this before and it is an ongoing argument by
'wannabes' who think because they have a tennis racquet, short skirt
and knickers, and got knocked out in their first game of the first
round of the club novices championships, that they are tennis players.

Finished in the top half; more like losing in the second or third round of the
    club open, I'd say.

How good do you have to be? Quarter finalist? Semi finalist? Winner? Only one
    real tennis player per club?

Using Dally's yardstick, it is only necessary to take part in a very
low-level amateur competition for novices, to label yourself just
    whatever you damn well please.

She'll just need to know where to use the description if she doesn't
want people to snigger at her.

People who have participated in a sport to a fairly high level are
able to assess the correct entry level to describe prowess with any
    degree of conviction.

What she might be able to say if people ask her "Are you a
'triathlete'?", is that she has in fact taken part in a competition.
It will take a great deal more competition, and some results perhaps,
before anyone else calls her a "triathlete".

Ask her children what they think she is, they're usually painfully
    honest. ;o)

Dally can't be a juggler because she hasn't got any balls, although
she's got the balls to call herself a "triathlete"!! ;o)

Want to see a three-ball trick, Charles?

    <throws fastball at Charles' testicles>

That's an easy "trick" on the Internet T, and is easily trumped by the
way I picked up a baseball bat and sent your "fastball" into the
    stands for a home run!

    See how it works?
