  3. Goals : Not miss the whole cross-country season. Lose >=7kg of blubber.

9th DNR (DN do any exercise, in fact) week.

Doc appointment on Monday a.m. again.
I won't be doing Toulouse marathon (in 3 weeks) even as a tourist or pace
    rabbit.

On the brighter side, just think how [censored]-off I'd have been if I'd
signed-up for NYCM this year :->

    Mon: DNR; strength building
    Tue: 5 miles 1:08:02 (13:36 min/mi)
    Wed: 3 miles 40:06 (13:22)
    Thu: DNR
    Fri: 5 miles 1:09:40 (13:56)
    Sat: DNR
    Sun: 9 miles 2:04:01 (13:46)

I told a friend after Friday's run, "A month ago, I would have been
ecstatic with it, but today I'm mildly disappointed with it." Also,
today's 9-mile run was three seconds per minute faster than last
Sunday's eight mile run. But the temperature was much cooler today than
    last Sunday.

Plan for next week is to add one mile to the long run, keeping the other
runs the same. Week after that is taper week, with the half marathon
    being two weeks from today.

Crossing the starting line is 90%.
Crossing the finish line is the other 90%.

  5. Goals:

Find a marathon to race within a month or so.
Join LA track club and try communal speedwork (never done that before, just
alone or with one or two friends). Stay healthy.

    Mon: 8 easy
Tue: 11 2000' climb at almost tempo pace -- still recovering from last weeks
    illness.
Wed: 8 easy, flat on San Vincente.
Thu: 11 2000' climb tempo. Sluggish on mostly uphill first half, normal
    speed back down.
Fri: 5.5 flat. Very tired. Tried an 8 minute mile, and it wasn't
    easy...race tomorrow.
    Sat: 10 1650' climb incl. 11k mountain race at Pt. Mugu. 6/110oa, 2nd 50+.
Sun: 14 2500' climb. Very slow, want to be recovered by Tuesday's track
    workout.

    67.5 mi, 8200' climb

    I hope it's a shrink this time?

I did Tolouse a few times, and her sister too.

What's your current dose of testosterone? Or do they stop that after
    surgery?

    Race: 1/2 Marathon next Sunday.

    Mon: DNR
Tue: 10k, gym (bike, row, weights)
    Wed: DNR
    Thu: 21k - unplanned diversion. easy/hilly/sluggish
    Fri: DNR
    Sat: 9k
    Sun: 23k easyish, feeling good.

    Total: 63km (39 miles)

I think I'm on for sub-85 in the race next week. Given that the race has
a net descent of almost 400 feet (in about 3 miles), I'm hoping for
perhaps a minute or two under.

OK week, no speed work and a little light on the long run in my hybrid
marathon training plan, kind of a rest week.

  10. 10/1 run 1:00 very easy 200' cinder
    10/2 off
    10/3 run 0:51 easy 180' cinder
    bike 0:41 easy
    10/4 bike 1:39 easy 640'
    10/5 run 0:48 very easy 180' cinder
    10/6 run 1:16 moderate 77% 1280' hiking trails, fartlek
    bike 0:40 easy
    10/7 bike 4:02 easy/mod 69% 4640'

    3:55 running, 7:02 biking

    Goals:
Eventually retool my running body and build some base (and goals) for next
    year.
Maybe some shorter road races this Fall.

For now, keep mixing in biking as the weather allows. I've been meaning to
get in a longer bike ride, but it didn't work out until today. Even though
my legs were tired at the start (ran the fartlek pretty hard yesterday), I
kept the pace easy and they held up ok, though I'd forgotten how serious the
climbs on this ride are. There was a 550 foot climb up willow grove in about
a mile into Harriman state park, then, later, a long meandering climb of 750
feet up tioroti brook road in the park. Beautiful indian summer day to be
    cycling up in the park!

I had been alternating evenly, the light weights and
cushioned shoes for a while. I switched to the Adidas LT & RC
for most of my runs after experiencing some low grade chronic
pain in my lower legs. I have been doing this for a few weeks now and
    feel great in them.
Seems, I don't do too well in shoes with 'cushion' and/or bulky heels.

Hey, today, October 8, is the anniversary of my broken ankle!

    * The dental appointment from hell. Beware of things that seem
simple. I needed a crown replaced. It was 20 something years old and
showed cracking at the margins. "How hard could it be?!" The answer
is, too hard. Damage to the tooth from a bad filling when I was a
teenager resulted in cracks right down through the root -- we had to
condemn the tooth and pull it. Unexpected dental surgery really is
    the stuff of nightmares.

So. I didn't make it to Sacramento. I didn't run at all much less
the half marathon. So now I'm off the hydrocodone and "only" on
ibuprofen, plus antibiotics. I'm wary of what the amoxicillin may do
to my stomach even after I'm ready to jar that empty tooth socket by
    running.

Hope you are all having better luck . . .

    Mon: DNR
    Tue: DNR
    Wed: 1.75 miles

    Fri: 3.5 miles
    Sat: DNR
Sun: walked around the mall for 6 hours (back-to-school shopping for
    the kids!)

A sucky week. Monday, late Friday and all day Saturday I was in a lot
of discomfort - nearly every joint in my body was stiff and/or
screaming. Fingers, wrists, elbows, hip, knees, feet... what a mess I
    am!

I am still experimenting, but it seems like there might be an optimal
level of running. I seem to be relatively okay running only 25-30
minutes every other day (joints do get cranky but it's at a tolerable
level). However, running 45 minutes or longer seems to completely
floor me the following day. Gentle walking seems to be better than no
activity, so I may just have to resign myself for now to walking,
    yoga, and <shudder> pool aerobics....

Doctor's appointment this week for more tests.

Goals: Grand Prix races (3 to go), and Tucson Marathon Dec 2nd. Stay healthy
    and uninjured!

    Mon: Rest Day (offical)
Tue: Rest Day (oops, but beyond my control)
Wed: 6.3 mi @ 8:55 pace. Mid 80's, humidity up again (rained last few
    days). Knee is fine.
Thur: 6.3 mi @ 9:43 pace. 89F, some clouds. Slight strain to knee (same
one of course, different spot) wheeling around to chase off Chihuahua.
    Dumb dog.
    Fri: 12.29 mi @ 9:57 pace. 71F (dawn), still a little humid. Felt a
little tired, but glad to get run done early today. Chihuahua Knee a
    teensy bit sore at first.
Sat: 6.3 mi normalish pace (messed up here). Cooler, hi 50's at dawn.
Blah, some intestinal disturbance so cut it short. C Knee better.
Sun: Jim Click's Run N Roll 8K. high *40's* this am. About froze!!
Ran 39:05 for AG 2nd. Didn't expect much due to the mileage and
knee, but felt better than expected. So I'm happy with it. (Also
I haven't been doing any speedwork lately....) about a mile warmup.

    Total: 37.19 mi

Still a little behind on total mileage for this part of marathon
training, must quit allowing "real life" to interfere with it! ;-)

Those have become known as "pool noodles" in this country. Just FYI.

We are in the 80s, hot & humid in the north east. 🙂
Congrats, nice way to get started your racing season.
