Now - do you have any suggestions for a HRM? Links?
Do a "google" search.
www.google.com, type in HRM then start reading, you can do your own
research

and decide what HRM you need.
You want one that records every workout? You want just the basic heart rate? You want to be able to set zones?
Do some research, then come back and tell us what you decided. 🙂

First I found that if you put "HRM" into Google, you get back a bunch of [censored] about Human Resources Management. Not helpfull. Then I tried Yahoo and got a better result.
I looked at the LifeSource XC-100 for $40. Not bad but I figgured I'd keep on looking. Then I found Polar. Saw the A1 for $46 and noted it has an average heart rate function that the XC-100 did not have. Hmm. Looked at the Impulse Strapless but that was $80 and you had to touch 2 pads on the unit to get a reading (not really safe when riding).... Also saw Timex, Cardiosport & others....
Kept on looking but the Polar A1 seems to give me the most for my money. I also don't think I need much more than heart rate and average.
Now I've been a good boy and did what you told me to do. Will you now fill me in? Have I missed a popular brand?
Polar S520 is popular and the data it collects is downloadable to your PC.
You may want to post on rec.bicycles.tech or rec.bicycles.misc for more opinions and for these type questions more appropiate.

I monitor those groups. I posted to this group because I thought the original post was relevant to this group ie: training for spin.
What is suprising is I did not get one single response telling me how to optimize my diet/stretching/training for spin - just abuse, flames off topic advice & trolls... Sad.

I think it's not at all surprising after you post "I'm a commuter who rides for fitness and transportation." in rec.bicycles.RACING.

The question is the true issue - how to train for spin. THAT is relevant to this group, don't you think?

Listen,
I went through the replies after reading this, and read plenty of straight-on advise for someone like you.
That Kurgan called you dumbass ot that the truth about your physical state echoes through here or there has nothing to do with the phenomenons you pretend to be encountering here.

From a totally different perspective and with a totally different objective, yes, I can see how it might be. However, as long as you keep boasting about your chrome plated brass nipples, it isn't.
What is suprising is I did not get one single response telling me how to optimize my diet/stretching/training for spin - just abuse, flames off topic advice & trolls... Sad.
Very well.
Unless you are racing on the track or singlespeed mountain bikes, the question is pretty much irrelevant. There really isn't much point in trying to increase your spin because doing so doesn't buy you anything.
And since there is no dietary component to spin, that part of the question has irrelevance that is two layers deep.
If you are interested in increasing leg speed as an intellectual exercise, that's different. But it won't have any meaningful impact on your riding. Unless riding a fixed gear or a single speed provides something that makes riding more interesting for you. This is a possibility and is worthwhile. But having higher leg speed won't make you more efficient or less injury prone or anything.
So ride your bike and don't worry about your leg speed.

I disagree. There are advantages to "spinning" other than just racing or riding fixed gear. It's easier on the knees. Also easier to accelerate quickly (important for commuting as well as racing). Personally I either build up lactic acid slower, or clear it quicker when "spinning".

What I do with the advice is irrelivant.
I am a Fattie. My beer gut is so large that I cannot see my Main Vein when I masturbate - the only way I can get an eyeful is looking in the mirror.
I would like to train for spin so I can lose some weight and see my Unit.
The question is the true issue - how to train for spin and lose weight. THAT is relavant to this newsgroup!

No it isn't.

Sheesh.....
Only a non-racer would assume that. When I read your first article I had a hard time knowing exactly what you meant. The phrase, "training for spin" does not make sense. Not that I am always the first to jump all over newbies. I just want you to understand that your article was not as appropriate to this group as you seem to still imagine.
The question is the true issue - how to train for spin. THAT is relevant to this group, don't you think?
Not if it's about weight loss or just riding around.

It's certainly irrelevant to this group if you're not racing.
Thus your initial post really shouldn't be here. I for one felt bad about objecting to your original post as you have a serious health problem, which you are trying to address. I guess that's cool. But still, your questions are off-topic for this group and don't belong here. Read the rec.bicycles.* FAQ.
