I'm currently transitioning from a MTB setup to a road bike setup (Bianchi). I'm a commuter who
rides for fitness and transportation.
I've been told that I need to shoot for a pedal "spin" rate of 90-95 rpm. I started at a comfort
pace of 75 but with a little effort am now at ease around 80-85 rpm and can shoot 95 rpm for 1-2
minute bursts. My "git da hell outta here" max pace is 137.5 rpm.
I'm 39, 230lbs and 5'8" with a 29" inseam. I was 298 in March, 2003 when I changed my diet to low
carb, low fat & low sugar. That is also when I started riding. So, with diet and excercise, I've
lost 68 lbs in 6 months. It's been hard because I'm an insulin dependant diabetic. I feel that my
target weight is 180. I don't smoke or drink.
I ride 10-15 casual miles per day averaging 80-90 rpm and 15-20 mph on my Bianchi. Here are the
details on the bike:
Derailurs & Shifters - Shimano 105's (1050/1055) Brakes - "Dia Compe" Seat - FEC Alloy SX (Very
light but nice) Gooseneck - SR Royal Handlebars - SR Road Champion Crank arms - SR 170mm Front gear
- Sugino 52-42 Rear gear - 25-23-20-17-15-13 Rims - Sun Mistral USA 700mm - 36 spoke alloy double
wall with stainless steel nipple gussets. Spokes - Stainless Steel Nipples - Chrome plated brass
Tires - Discovery Kevlar CyclePro 700x25 Tubes - Slime 700x self healing Pedals - Generic flat
pedals (not clip ons) Skewers - Suzue Wheel hubs - Suzue 36 spoke Valve stems - Presta (bought an
adapter for $2) Computer - Cateye Astrale CC-CD100 N GPS - Garmin Etrex Vista w/Mapsource data
Communications - Yaesu VX-7Rb handheld
The move from a mtb pace of 75 rpm to a road pace of 80-85 has been easy but I think I'll need tips
to get that last 10 rpm.
Any ideas? What should I eat/drink to help me develop the right muscle structure to get that higher
pace? My current diet is rich in non starch vegetables, whole fruits (no juice) and white fish &
chicken breasts. I avoid starches & hi carb food like most breads, pastas & grains like rice.
Also would stretching before riding help/hurt?
Thanks in advance for all help....
