  1. Has anyone experienced a problem with ammonia body odour? I've been
noticing it faintly in the shower for about 3 weeks now. I don't work out
or do any strenuous activity that would cause me to sweat, this is just
whatever has accumulated during the previous day. Luckily, I seem to be
the only one who can smell it since my co-workers haven't started to shun
    me...yet.
I average between 100 and 130g protein per day, but I'm a small person at 5
feet 2.5 inches tall and 110 pounds. Protein Power Plan recommends only
81g protein per day for someone my size. And I'm also slowly working my
carb intake up to whatever my maintenance level will be. I'm currently at
    45g net carbs per day.
I did google on the net and it's likely due to too much protein for me.
Several sites recommended L-Arginine supplementation, but I gained 1.5
pounds in 3 days when I tried it. Reducing my protein to anything under
90g per day would drop my daily calories to around 1100. I don't want to
go that low or I'm afraid I'll lose more weight.
    Any advice?

  3. How? I'm already using high-fat salad dressings, butter on veggies,
full-fat yogurt, etc. My fat intake generally equals or surpasses my
    protein grams per day.

  4. Thanks, this makes me feel a little better. :-)
As I mentioned, if I decrease my protein my calories will drop too. I'm
under 1700 per day as it is. So I'm going to stick it out. I'm hoping it
will diminish as my carb intake increases over the next few months.
I was worried after I first noticed it and found sites talking about kidney
    problems. I just hope my co-workers don't start wearing nose-plugs when I
    walk into a room. :-)))

Reduce your protein and increase your fat intake to maintain the same
calorie balance. If you're concerned about the effects of too much protein,
you may want to read DANDR as an alternative o ver Protein Power. Atkins
is a high-fat/moderate-protein/low-carb plan and has none of the dangers of
    high-protein plans.

It should surpass it by a lot. Many of us find the ideal calorie ratio for
weight loss and health benefits to be about 75% fat, 20% protein and 5%
    carbs.

Typically I have eggs for breakfast, salad with deli-turkey for lunch
and dinner can be chicken, fish, beef.

I have noticed that my hair feels dirty all the time tho.

  12. I'd like to know too. My typical menu is full-fat yogurt with 2
tablespoons of flax oil and fruit for breakfast, baked black soy beans (has
bacon and butter in recipe) with full-fat garlic sausage or similar for
lunch, and beef, lamb or pork (fat not trimmed) with salad (full-fat
dressing) and veggies (butter added) for dinner. My protein generally
equals or is slightly lower than my fat grams.

  13. Judy,

I found that controlling protein was an important part of making my low carb
    weight loss work.

I've put together a page that helps you calculate your actual need for
    protein at http://www.geocities.com/jenny_the_bean/proteincalc.htm

Cutting protein most definitely eliminated the bad breath that had caused
serious problems for me in my earlier stint of low carbing.

Unfortunately, it has to be said, that cutting protein also takes away a lot
of the "fun" of eating low carb especially for women. The smaller you are,
the lower your need for protein, the more likely that you won't be able to
feast on 8 ounce hamburgers and 12 ounce steaks and still lose weight.

I don't. I am on Atkins and I only had those percentages during
Induction, 14 days. After that my percentage of carbs increased
on schedule and my percentage of fat fell to match it. My
percentage of protein always hovered in the 20-30% range. My
CCLL used during my loss phases was 50 grams of carb per day,
a bit over 10%. My CCLM used during Maintenance phase is 100,
    around 20%.

As to how to acheive 75% fat, 20% protein, 5% fat, do it by
following the directions in the 1993 and 1999 edition of the
DANDR book works. "Be shocklingly unfraid of fat" is what Dr A
wrote. Butter on the broccoli, don't trim the steak, that sort
of stuff. It all tapers off as you move farther into the plan.

    Quoted message said:

Atkins is high fat not high protein. In Discover magazine this
month is an article that mentions that 40% of calories from protein
is a practical maximum above which most people get health problems.

But just figuring fat and protein, for the same total calories
more fat and less protein does cause better loss in a lot of people.
In contrast, for the same total calories more protein and less fat
    takes less effort.

Drinking oil from the bottle could easily be something your body
will forbid you from doing if you try it several days in a row.
I tried having two shot glasses of olive oil for breakfast every
day for a week a few years ago. It was the same number of
calories as my usual eggs and cheese, so it should have been
interchangible. No way. I had no problem the first day or two.
Then each day it got harder and harder to do. By the end of the
week I gagged on the first sip and couldn't swallow it without
holding my nose. But to show how purity effects the body's
reaction to fat, think about having the same amount of fat as
amount a cup of cream. I might be able to chug that daily forever.

    Anyways ...

Think of having a plate with olive oil on the table. Have about
half your regular portion of meat and dip each piece in olive
oil. It will end up about the same total calories, more filling,
and your targetted ratio. Consider 50-50 olive oil and some type
of nut oil for the essential fatty acids.

When you have your veggie, add oil or butter.

    Hello Judy,

Could you tell us approximately how many calories you've been
consuming? Since you don't have much to lose (less than 50 lbs),
    calories can really matter.

That's a disgusting thought for me. I hate oily food.

  20. Carbs in cream are 1 per ounce, 11 grams of fat and one of protein, more fat
bang than nuts. Cream cheese is the same. How low are you keeping your
