Gee, I follow a lot of bike related stuff, even read most of what's on
rbr, but seem to have missed all these people killed by maniacal
drivers. Actually, I can list more teenagers in cars killed in our
local area alone in the last couple of weeks due to stupid and
possibly maniacal drivers than all the cyclists killed by drivers
across the U.S. in the same period. (Admittedly, we have had a bad
couple of weeks in our area.)

We need a bit of rhetorical restraint on all sides. Cosidering the
number of cyclists that I have known from LAW in its better days and
the ABLA and USCF as a rider and official, I'm kind of surprised about
how few riders I've known that have died or been seriously injured
(not counting bike racing). And not all cycling deaths are from
drivers.

I'm in Upstate, SC. Three cyclist deaths here in the past WEEK! Nothing
about it is even remotely humorous. And as far as I'm concerned, an
inattentive driver might just as well be a crazed, maniacle driver. Same
end result.

Female cycling team decimated, must have been 20 announcements here and in
misc over the past 10 months. Several pros, triathletes, rec riders. I get
buzzed daily and I'm riding rural roads near the stock yards. Sheesh.

20 announcements over the last ten months, with people pulling info
from newspapers all over the world? We've had three multiple injuries
with death accidents involving teens in a very small area inside of
two weeks, not ten months. Get some perspective.

I thought the joke was a touch tasteless, but then the dead bell
ringer joke is too and it made Readers Digest*. There's a Hispanic
comedian on the Comedy Channel that would appear to me to be a good
candidate for being hauled out and beaten consecutively by all major
racial groups in random order, but the place is filled with people
(all colors) laughing, so what do I know? I changed the channel,
although the last joke was kind of funny. rbr has other threads to
read...

Uh, not following you man. Are you saying 3 multiple injuries with death
accidents invoking teens -on bicycles-? Or are you comparing bike riding
against teen pedestrian or vehicular accidental deaths?

I'm not trying to bring Frank out of retirement claiming cycling is
dangerous. I'm just saying that local riders all give each other the 'stay
safe' blessing before every ride. You never know if you're coming back from
a ride. Is that overly dramatic? I s'pose. I'm not just the only one saying
it. In fact I tend to downplay.

It's almost as though you're saying that a cycling death has no impact on
you. What's up with these mass funeral rides that the whole 'community'
attends in solemn and touching fellowship? Total BS? Delusional? Lacking
perspective? A need to get together and be drama queens?

Ever been -on- a ride to celebrate a fallen rider? If not, that's good,
bro, because I wouldn't want you touched by something like that. Not to be
too ponderous about it but I've written an eulogy and had to stand there
and talk about a dear friend who was now sitting in a jar on the mantle of
the church.

to do with the dead or their family. Made it easy to not go to

If there is a cause, ride for the cause. If there is a death, leave it
to the family and friends. I make no special claims on a person's
death because of a common trait like riding a bike that in the end is
so trivial.

If I know someone that has died, I'll deal with that personally. If I
didn't, I won't pretend a solidarity that likely never existed.

On another topic, I got a Fluid trainer today. It's my birthday (well close
enough), and I got a clean bill of health at the doctor's, and I'm still
riding. I had a bit of a health scare this weekend.

Suffice it to say I could easily kick my own ass from the past five years.
Hell, I could go back and kick my 45 year old ass. Woo-hoo. When you're my
age you'll see the excitement in such a thing. ;-D
