The Wind Blows

No matter how the wind blows, it nevers pushes you hard enough to push
you into Jersey. Our most interesting attraction is the DEVIL who lives
in the Pine Barrens, and no one can catch him.

Maggie doesn't get out to the shore much does she? We have plenty of
Bennies (don't ask I don't know where the name comes from) visiting
each summer.

As fro the wind, doesn't get much better here, just comes at you in a
different direction. My Saturday rides are notorious for starting with
a headwind and ending with a headwind. Though we did get a strong tail
wind once but we still don't beleive it. :-)

As for the Jersey Devil it's my understanding that he likes his
cyclist with butt-butt'r, it's like steak sauce!

I beg to differ, I am a Jersey Bennie. I am at the shore almost every
weekend in the summer. Great place to ride a bike. I am from North
Jersey and the people down in South Jersey hate when we hit the beaches
and rent houses, or open up our vacation homes every summer. So most
of the Bennies you refer to, are just us Northern Jersey Folks who hit
the parkway South every weekend. My friends from NYC think we are all
nuts heading "DOWN THE SHORE" every weekend. Sitting in traffic for
hours to get there. I really don't think you have many people from out
of state coming to the Jersey shore. The Jersey Shore belongs to us.
And so does AC. Harrahs is my home away from home. As for the NJ Devil
in the Pine Barrens, there are some really fascinating stories on the
internet about him. When I drive past the Pine Barrens, I keep looking
for him. Haven't seen him yet. ;-) Maybe he rides a bike and thats why
no one can catch him. He probably owns a TREK.

Are you a Benny and don't even know it? Bennies are folks who come down
the shore for the summer, the week or just the day. On one hand they
seem to "invade" the all year rounder's territory and on the other hand
they bring lots of business to the area. Did you know Benny is an
acronym for Bayonne-Elizabeth-Newark-New York B-E-N-N-Y...whose
residents flocked to the shore during the summer months. That term goes
back to the 1940's.

You're forgetting Philadelphia - there's a steady exodus to 'da shore
every Friday. I spent about 7 years in "Joizey" (between Wall
Township and Brick) and did a lot of riding there. New Jersey has
some surprisingly nice areas, and some that richly deserve the
reputation the state has.

But the wind can be your friend - I used to do a ride on I-195 (an
interstate-style road that ran E-W across the center of the state).
We'd time it so we had a tailwind all the way out, and so the wind
would be swinging around to blow us back to the east on the way home.

Well here is a twist. My whole family decided to rent a big house for
a week sometime during the summer and we ended up picking NEW JERSEY!
We are going to Cape May. That is really south, I mean any further
south and you're in Delaware. I have no idea what it is like though.
Any hints on good places to frequent would be welcome.

I do intend to bring a few bikes along.

It looks like there should be good waves. And it isn't far from AC.
Maybe we'll go visit the Springsteen shrines in Asbury Park.

Cape may is the absolute best place for riding a bike. I've been to
Cape May numerous times and always rented a bike. If you live in Cape
May you own a bike. Guaranteed. You will love it. It's a cyclist's
dream. I have friends who live in Cape May. They live right near the
Ferry to cross over into Delaware. They all ride bikes. Just go on the
internet and google bike rides in Cape May and see how many bike paths
and trails there are...it will amaze you. This one is the best....The
Route of the Gull..

The "Route of the Gull" which is Ocean Drive, is a scenic route that
links the barrier islands of Cape May County. The 40-mile stretch of
coastline from Cape May Point to Absecon Island (Atlantic City) is an
example of nature at its best. A bike ride along this scenic highway
provides a full day of entertainment as bike riders pedal along and
enjoy the beautiful views. Countless islands and a family of bridges
operated and maintained by the Cape May Bridge Commission provide the
link for bikers to enjoy this change of pace.

If you end up stopping by Asbury Park, you have to try to have dinner
at Moonstruck. It is almost impossible to get in on a summer night,
but its worth the wait. You can also go over and see The Stone
Pony.....I am old enough to remember it back in its GLORY DAYS. I grew
up spending summers in Asbury Park before it fell apart. This is their
website. Great food. Good Martini's. The Moonstruck Martini is the
best. If you are old enough to have a martini. ;-)

I think it goes back further than that. My grandparents talked about the
Bennies at the shore in the 20s and 30s.

Now they're all at the malls in Myrtle Beach. You can hear them from a hundred

Once Memorial Day hits until Labor Day I avoid the Jersey Shore for
the most part. I'll ride out to Sandy Hook early in the day but not

Now you're talking! This is my home turf. Though it's a lot busier
than it used to be. Still there are lots of gorgeous areas to ride
in. I have a ride from Brookdale to Brielle to Sandy Hook back
again. I'll be working on the Jamesburg to Brielle and back ride this
year.

I love the Pine Barrens and it's much prettier riding through them
than what you see on the GSP. Maybe the reason I don't see the Jersey
Devil is that we're chasing him. :-)

Now I don't live down the shore as I live almost 30 miles from the

Yes, Philly people tend to come to Jersey for some reason. I guess
Philly and Jersey tend to mesh together well. (I wonder why ;-)
My niece married a guy from South Philly, now my Jersey niece and her
South Philly husband live in Lake Tahoe. It was a job transfer. Can
you imagine? Jersey and South Philly in Tahoe. Think they fit in????

Looks like Asbury Park is starting to fix up the place. I rode
through there a few months ago and they hadn't started yet. But I just
read where they tore down the Paladium (?) where the old carousel
house used to be and they tore down the building across the street
that had the big smiling face on it (Tillie). They save Tillie but the
rest are gone. They're also going to tear down the half built high
rise (I think) and put up something else (condo's). Hopefully this
will mean the rebirth of Asbury Park.

The rest of the area North is being torn down and fixed up. Hope it
doesn't turn totally private I like riding down by the shore in the
Spring.

I thought everyone went to Toms River when they finally went South for
good. It's getting to be like Little Italy down there. Well, the parts
of Toms River I have been to, look like Little Italy. Its a big town.

Tomorrow will be my third Saturday in a row riding in New Jersey. My
buddy, who is leading us, has a huge collection of rides that are just
outstanding, and a surprising number are in Jersey. Of course, one of
these is his killer ride up Fiddler's Elbow, probably the steepest road in
the East. That is not on tap for tomorrow, thankfully.
