Well, you probably wouldn't like it. One of the spokes is red.

Not blood, I hope! Nathan & Vernon were musing this evening about suitable
responses for the terminally unobservant when they are out cycling. Nathan
decided a removable pointy spoke could prove a useful addition to a
cyclist's tool kit... Vernon was more inclined to the grenade launcher
    school of thought.

That hit me also. £1,600 for a pair of wheels for a young boy. Its
your money no doubt honestly earned - but somehow that doesnt seem
    quite right to me.

Well just as I have no right to tell you what to spend your money on, you
have no right to tell me what to spend mine on.

You are absolutely right to say that.

I could buy him his first car...

Ah - now that *would* attract some adverse comment :-)

That reminds me of a tour in Normandy when on one cold November night, we
arrived at Pennidepie youth hostel only to find it closed.
Having spent the previous night in a freezing bus shelter wrapped in
newspapers we didn't fancy a second night out 'rough'.

A spoke was used to unpick the lock :-)

You never know when a spare spoke can be useful.

I notice that most of the 'bad' comments are ageist, and the posters don't
seem to think it relevent that the recipient of the wheels is both stupidly
fast and improving all the time..

By all accounts, Nathan is _sensibly_ fast and improving. Faster than
    me anyway.

What is _sensibly _ fast for a 16/17 year old?

Almost as fast as Alan Holmes.

  6. Well just as I have no right to tell you what to spend your money on,
    you
have no right to tell me what to spend mine on. I could, of course,
    spend it
on drink. I could buy him his first car... I could spend it on drugs,
    but
no, it's been spent on something which helps him enjoy his chosen
    sport, a
healthy pursuit. Of course if you wish to be that judgemental perhaps
    you
think no-one should buy a Colnago... The fact I light-heartedly post
    about
eating beans on toast for a while, perhaps yours and others reaction
    along
the lines of 'doesn't seem quite right' or 'surely he should be
    studying'
are just jealousy in disguise. Perhaps you will tell me just what you
    think
I should be spending money on? Perhaps you will post about your
    cycling
purchases so I can cast moral judgements on what you buy?

    Cheers, helen s

If I caused you any offence I unreservedly apologise. You are quite
    right its jealousy.

As to my cycling purchases I shall buy two new tyres for my bike that
I bought when I was 18 year old apprentice earning £4.10s a week, I am
now 63. Ok the equipment is not that age only the frame - but I doubt
if anything is younger than 8 years. On an income of £109.45 per week
even two tyres need saving for.

Again apologies if I upset your sensibilities.

Young? Thank you very much, it's been a while since I've been called that
(or felt it). I feel confident that even the PSF's throwing arm isn't
strong enough to reach me in Australia (been unable to give up the URC
habit since emigrating). Just don't tell her there are such things as
    planes please! 🙂

Did you remember to empty your vacuum cleaner when you emigrated ? Chap
I know forgot to do so when he emigrated to New Zealand and got a Severe

OK, I won't - unfortunately, I think *you* just did.....

The possible alternatives are worse: just imagine the slab throwing
