Cleared up the talk with Ullrich near the finish on stage 17. Jan wanted
him to work, but Lance made the decision not to, since Jan was the one who
needed to take time out of Basso.
Thought Phil and Paul would grill Lance more on doping and Simeoni.

I like Lance trying to ply semantics with something like "calling someone a
liar and saying they aren't telling the truth is not the same."

    Yeah, that flies...

stick to riding a bike Lance and let the lawyers talk about the big words
and complicated stuff. Stick to what you know, ordering people around.

  2. Thanx for posting a summary on the interview, up in in the great white
north oln would rather show dogs for an audience of 50 nationwide than
    carry the interview.

other Lance stuff multiple times hopefully this too.

    Thanks

He did elaborate a little more - Lance said he never called him a liar, just
that he wasn't telling the truth. Lance thinks there is a distinction there.
He mentioned that Simeoni was an acknowledged doper, but when he won a stage
of the Vuelta, he got off his bike, walked across the line and then made a
big deal of saying that he was the only clean rider in the peloton. Lance
felt this implied that he and everyone else was doping. Lance said he had a
history of insulting the riders and the sport as evidenced by his attack at
kilometer 0 of the last stage. If what Lance says is true, it really sounds
    like Simeoni is an ass.

    -T

FWIW, a minor point. There is real distinction legally between saying
someone told an untruth, a lie, and saying he is a liar. LA was
objecting to Semeoni's claim that all riders were doping except him.
This is the "lie" LA thinks is detrimental to cycling. Semeoni would
have great difficulty trying to prove his claim. On the other hand,
saying someone is a "liar" means that he lies so frequently that he
has a reputation of being a liar.

Why did they have to chase him? They had zero chance of catching him on
the GC. They could have let him go as much as the dudes 1 hour behind.

If you wanted to remain in good graces with Lance, as I suspect Phil and

If you were a professional talker would you be willing to [censored] a subject

Quite right. He was the one "GC rider" who the rest could let go. Maybe for
pride's sake they wouldn't have let him get 10 mins, but the fact that he
got 2'20 without a reaction means that either a) the teams that mattered
knew what he was up to or b) they didn't really care

Not sure if I buy it, usually the Maillot Jaune counters with his team to
chase down a threatening breakaway. All the posties were there, but Lance
was the only one from his team who followed the attack on non-threatening GC
riders. Then rejoined the Peloton to apologize? It's not clear cut, still
think it's personal with Simeoni, sending a message about the respect for
    the leader of the tour.

    Ray.

Lance's comment was specifically directed at Simeoni's statement that Dr.
Ferrari was responsible for his doping program. Lance claims to have said
"He's not telling the truth" This is the basis of Simeoni's litigation.

    http://193.195.96.172/displayarticle.asp?pk=6762

After reading this Pro Cycling News article I was puzzled by the fact
that it was written three years after the fact. Being skeptical of
the media, I googled "simeoni vuelta" and found this cycling news
race day, Sept. 27, 2001, report
    http://www.team.malarenergi.se/probike/oldnew2/010930.html which, in
    pertinent part, reads as follows:

"Simeoni took his feet off the pedals as the finish approached,
wiggled his legs in the air and freewheeled to a standstill just
before the line. Simeoni followed up these antics by posing briefly
with the bike above his head before walking across the line, pushing
    his bike.

'I was just so happy at getting a stage victory for myself and the
team - this is my best-ever win - that I thought I'd celebrate in a
memorable fashion and give the crowd something to remember me by,'
    Simeoni said."

There is no dedication to 9/11. RBR posters, at the time, also
commented on the incident primarily on the UCI imposing a fine on
Simeoni for his unbecoming conduct. I don't have any idea where Pro
Cycling, came up with the 9/11 spin.

I hope that you do not my bringing this matter to your attention in
the wrong way. For the longest time I assumed, as you undoubtedly
do, that published reports of events would be candid, i.e. the
reporter would have researched and report all sides of the question.
I have found this to be less and less true. The media frankly cannot
be trusted. While you and I have been honed to mistrust advertising
and celebrity promotion, we have not be cautioned to mistrust the
media. Yet there is little question that journalism is no longer
    worthy of confidence.

I am reaching the point of asking, if doping tests are important for
athletes, should candor tests be required of journalists? If athletes
who fail are suspended, should journalists who fail also be suspended?

Until journalists are tested, I won't be taking their writings very
    seriously.

  15. Loved the section when Lance was asked his plans, told Phil a number
of races and charitable events and then said "run for governor of
    Texas...pause...just joking"

Actually I think he would make the perfect politician.

Why not? Lance was already ahead. Are they supposed to chase him to
limit their time gap to some completely arbitrary value? TMobile was
    chasing half-heartedly if at all.

    Ken,
please note that post like this are confusing many people and degrading
their newsgroups experience. Please bear that in mind for your future
    postings.

    Thanks,
    Ernst

Someone recently posted a link to a report on the race in question.
Simeoni at the time commented that his gesture was meant to somehow
acknowledge the attack and the victims. He sounded like a really great
guy in that article. I still like Lance just as much, but based on that
slightly silly gesture of Simeoni's, AND his in-your-face attacks on the
last stage of the TdF, I kinda like Simeoni too. The guy's got character.
