  1. Track stands are cool. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Looking cool (James Dean rebel without a cause type yawn I'm so cool) while doing a track stand is even cooler. ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ˜Ž Way cool. I like to throw in the odd one hander, just for the fans.๐Ÿ˜„ Its a risky manoeuver, but worth it for the right crowd. Like a friday afternoon "5.05pm heading for the bus stops Brisbane CDB" crowd.๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜„

So I'm pullin a steady stand, and then I go for the uber-cool one hander ...... Oh [censored]!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   I hit the deck harder than Beazely hits sizzler on a Sunday. I'm like a christmas beetle on its back, only with a bus behind me and a green light in front. The crowd rises, as one, and laughs. The [censored]. I close my eyes now and still hear the laughter and the name calling - "Hey look - a turtle. go Michelangelo, go Leonardo !!" I'll be back.

So that I can start to mend emotionally, please post your best "when track stands attack" stories. The winner (you be the judges) will receive a prize. I will personally design and craft (using fine plastics, paint, imitation wood, fake ivory, bostik hot glue, tin foil, glitter, staples and other precious tools of the trophy-makers trade) the "Track stand of the Year Perpetual Trophy".

Hmmm, this tale may not be exactly what you're after, it's more about me having evil thoughts....

Evil thoughts? Ok, several years ago I was travelling down from Keilor, got down to Pascoe Vale/Brunswick West. Having a delightfully jolly ride, the birds were singing, no altercations whatsoever, wind at my back...when...I stopped at the intersection of Moreland/Melville. A roadie was infront of me - doing a trackstand. But he was trying it on a tad *too hard*. His firmly muscled, pert flanks, *ahem* were all scrunched up within his snug fitting knicks...evil thought develops...why don't I give him a firm jab in the bum with a index finger & watch the results. But my impulse control reigned though. Fortunately for him. ๐Ÿ˜„

It's too long ago to be Neil, but he'd be the type to do this - the
track stand that is, and ripe for good suprise - he delights in doing
no-hands trackstands at lights. If you went to the dirt crits on
Thursday, he was the lad in the aboc kit riding B grade who came last
finisher in B grade (go, team! ๐Ÿ™‚ ). I was the git on the roady trying
    desperatly to kill every mosquito!

I've been thinking about doing one handed track stands, coz I like not
having to unclip, but it would be nice to grab a drink at a set of
lights while still staying clipped in. I think I could manage a one
hander, but I'm pretty sure leaning down to grab a bidon would kill my
balance. I can sometimes track stand while seated, but always end up
    having to stand....

Does it have to be one where I get hurt? Was doing a MTB training ride
this morning, came across the rock garden on one trail. My MTB is a
cheap [censored] piece of [censored] with limited fork travel, so I nailed the
brakes and stopped to check it out before proceeding. The bloke behind
me was expecting me to just roll straight over it, coz he hadn't been
on that trail before, so as I power away again, he's crashing into the
rocks. I yell out 'are you ok'. He says 'yeah' and then I hear another
crash. Which was the bloke behind him locking it up and whacking one
of the rocks, but he stayed upright. Thought the first bloke might
have been hurt, but he just had trouble getting up coz he ended up
laying backwards downhill, still clipped in, with the bike on top of
him. He was OK, just some minor bruises and scrapes ๐Ÿ˜„

I gave up trying to track stand donkeys years ago, the best I can hope
for is minor embarassment. My right leg is a good deal weaker than it
should be and can't support my weight alone, I need to at least hang
onto something. If I've got to us only one leg I'd MUCH prefer it to be
the left one. Guess which side I ALWAYS bloody well fall to. Yep,
that's right I end up on my right side on the road thereby providing
much amusment for the inevitable passing crowd and varying degrees of
    embarassment for me...:-)

Anyway, on the open day ride over the Westgate bridge (Melbourne) the
day before it opened my brother and I rode for a while behind a couple
of fast, and by our standards (this was a loooong time ago), old blokes
on fixies. At every set of lights they'd just stop and continue
nattering without ever putting a foot to the ground OR getting up off
the seat. One of 'em had a "party trick" - a no handed track stand
while pulling a jersey on over his head.

    We were properly impressed...:-)

Hey, sounds like Tunnel of Love, yes/no? I went out to Karawatha this
morning because it was my first time back on the bike since Epic (yep,
since 04 Sep 05) and I was riding alone. Lots of fire trail... bit of
single track and one track I had to walk a bit of! Minimal squealing,
minimal bailing, zero stacks, so it was a good morning. I also explored
out near the quarry (where the trails aren't marked on the map) and gee
it's pretty out there. I guess the water is stained with copper, because
it's very bright blue; is the "no swimming" sign for fear of people
drowning, or because the water is polluted? Anyone know?

Tam in the area I live their are some old minesites that have filled up
with water and are bright blue/green. It's from white clay in the water
that is essentially reflecting the sky colors.
There's a picture here that shows what I mean.
    http://www.colliegolfclub.com.au/images/Black%20Diamond%20Lake.jpg

Some of the old minesites have a pretty low pH (as low as 2) but it
doesn't seem to cause any problems.

Minor fatigue seems to help me. Slower reactions probably mean less
    overbalancing.

So I can't always trackstand on my commute (OK, maybe it's the
shifting backpack), but after a 90km BRยฎ, I seem to be able to
trackstand fairly easily. Unfortunately, the lights turned green at
one point today on an uphill, just as I started to roll backwards.
Would have been fun to find out whether I can trackstand rolling
    backwards.

I've taken legal advice from the cats. You meant to fall. Don't act

Nah, the little rock garden was on Nirvana, what an awesome single
track that is too. The climb in the middle of it tends to sort out a
lot of people. The rock garden was a little before that climb.

As for the quarry in Karawatha, I don't know why the 'no swimming'
sign is there, but I've seen people swimming in there before. It is
very nice around there. Karawatha is only a couple of minutes ride
    from my place too.

  10. I used to track stand on the tandem. Not for long but just enough at lights until they changed to green.
    Until.
One day I tried for a bit to long and started to lean the bike over to the right to much and I always unclip with my left foot. In an effort to get the bike upright again and leaning the right way for me I flicked the bike back to the right position for me. Only problem was that I flicked my wife off the back in the process.
Bugger. Did I ever cop it.
Like I said, I used to trackstand............

    Cheers

Probably a liabilty thing more than anything else. If you
want to be sure buy one of those instant test kits from a
pool shop. It'll tell you if the pH is ok. Also check the
DNR contaminated land register for the site. It'll tell you
if there is contamination and what it is.

  13. I did a good sit down track stand this morning. Was coming into the
carpark and a car stopped to reverse into its spot, so I hit the brakes
and just sat there. Was quite impressed with myself ๐Ÿ™‚ Also did a few
brief one handers at traffic lights, though I kept the free hand close
to the bars, which was a good thing when I eventually lost my balance.

    Do sit down trackstands on a 230kg motorbike count? That's 230kg +
rider + gear in the boot. I can't do it for very long, but in traffic
if I just rev it a bit, ride the clutch, and use the rear brake to hold
it I can sit for 5 secs or so before I have to let off some brake to
keep my balance. I've gotten a thumbs up from a few motorists watching.
I'm just waiting for the day I topple over coz I forget I'm not clipped
    in ๐Ÿ™‚
