  1. Hi,

I swim once or twice a week in an outdoor pool.

Recently, I have been suffering flu like symptoms after swimming. Typically, I swim 1500 m, then a
couple of hours later the symptoms appear, which last an hour or two; feverish, sore throat, etc.

It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be noticeable.

Weird, huh? Like an allergy to chlorine. Anyone ever hear of anything like that?

My guess would be a minor bacterial infection due to bad pool maintenance. This kind of thing
happens more often in hot climates, where it is harder to stabilize the pool chemistry in hot
weather when there are a lot of people in and out of the pool.

    Probably it's due to chlorine.

In indoor pools the efect can be stronger because of air concentration.

Search for chlorine effects in pools in Google.

Can you correlate your symptoms with the timing of the application of chemicals in the pool?
Sometimes, say they use powders, there's a lingering cloud of the stuff over the pool surface. Under
any circumstance, it sounds as if you're inhaling something that doesn't agree with you.

How hard are you swimming? I'm thinking temporary immune suppression from overexertion. It seems odd
to me that a chlorine allergy would take that long to develop and not really change over time. It
seems to me that an allergy with that much of a systemic effect would get a lot worse and start
while you were still in the pool.

I'd see a doctor. It could even be something like mono or a fungal infection slowly developing.

Incidentally, I had similar experiences post-mono for several years.

Don't rule out other contaminants, Shampoo from the shower area getting into the pool or as fumes at
water level, deodourants/perfumes worn by swimmers etc. I often have problems after swimming at one
pool due to shampoo used in the showers. At another pool swimmers have suffered from fumes from
cleaning agents used in the building.
