stem backwards ok?

    Is there a point to this other than to make a simple idea needlessly
    complex? When your front wheel is turning the top is going in the
    opposite direction as the bottom. What does this mean for the average
    bike rider? Not a whole hell of a lot. You know you are in RBT when
    any question that comes within a mile of physics becomes the semantics
    argument of the week.

    How do some of you folks function during the day, sheesh*3.14.

    Yes the stem will travel in a relatively opposite direction if you
    switch it from forward to rearward facing. But last time I checked few
    folks steer a bike from the end of the stem. With a straight handle
    bar you'll still twist (turn, swing) it in the same direction
    regardless of stem direction.
    To turn right (walking pace, no counter steer)

    up ---------------------------down
    |
    | stem will move clockwise/right
    0

    0
    |
    | stem will more clockwise/left
    up ---------------------------down

    Imagine a big steering wheel on a bike where normal hand postions are
    at 10 and 2. All that's really happening when you switch stem
    direction is that you're now steering the bike with hands at 8 and 4.

    It should be fine -- may look a little strange, but won't really effect
    steering much.

    I disagree. The stem moves exactly the same way. The stem is an axis
    which always moves its North point to the right to make a right turn
    and its South point to the left to make a right turn. Conventional
    stems just trim the axis at the center (head tube) location.
    Geometrically speaking, it's still there, and it's always moving the
    same way to make the same turn.

    Look at it.

    With the stem pointing forward
    Right turn -> steering tube rotates clockwise -> stem-bar clamp moves right.

    With the stem pointing rearward
    Right turn -> steering tube rotates clockwise -> stem-bar clamp moves _left_.

    Everybody, if more than one person is saying something
    counter-intuitive, it is best not to dismiss them immediately.

    Victor's description seemed clear to me the first time and still does.
    As Chalo notes, a short stem would make the effect minimal but
    imagine a 120 stem pointing right at you - get it now? A road bar
    might even hit the top tube on its way to the left in a right turn.

    Two elements of the motion can be teased out. Rotation about the
    steering axis and translation wrt the steering axis. The latter
    difference is perceptible.

    How do you know? Can you guarantee that when the son tries to ride
    a bicycle with a forward directed stem that the son will not have
    problems? I think he will.

    Absolutely false. Want to turn right? Move your left hand away and your
    right hand in. Only difference, really, is the amount of elbow bend.

    How do you know? Can you guarantee that when the son tries to ride
    a bicycle with a forward directed stem that the son will not have
    problems? I think he will.

    Of course he won't. He'll TURN the handlebar (singular) the exact same way
    and direction as always. The stem's just along for the...ride.
