I am ordering a new frame and need to give my dealer the spindle length for the bottom bracket, as I am using an old school (like early 80s) shimano 600 crank. I'm thinking 113mm is right (didn't get a chance to measure last night and need info today). Anyone have any ideas?

If the NEW frame is aluminum, then I think that you probably want a BB with 118mm spindle length because the stays may be fatter ... otherwise, 113mm is the right length.

The new frame is a surly pacer steel frame, with 73mm bottom bracket width.thanks.

I could be wrong (obviously!), but I think the fact that the frame has a 73mm BB shell (typical on many aluminum MTB frames, of course) infers that you want a spindle that is 5mm longer ... I would be inclined to go with the 118mm spindle -- I'm not even sure that you could get a 73-113 BB.
FWIW. I did find that on aluminum frames that a 118mm spindle was "required" with a crank that would normally use a 113mm on a "regular" steel frame which has a 68mm BB shell.
Having said THAT, I will note that I have observed that Shimano's MTB cranks have a wider Q-factor than their road cranks ... so (for example), a 113mm spindle would probably work with an square-taper XT crank.

BTW. I checked the specs, and the BB shell is 68mm. So, 113mm should be the correct length.

FWIW. While the frame can use either "regular" or "long" reach brake calipers, apparently (according to EXCEL SPORTS), the braking is better with the long reach.
