are these what you got Suzy? (and what did you fork out?)

Mine are same shape, but grey rather than black, and rather more beat up. I paid $22.

Just measured them, 62cm = outside measurement. My
partners dually = 65cm and Single speed = 70cm No problem
for me, considering one has narrow shoulders.

Regarding the width, the guy at Abbotsford Cycles was
annoyed that the latest batch were only about half a
centimetre wider than the old stock as opposed to the two
centimetres wider he wanted. That would indicate he's after
    a 64 - 65cm bar.

Apologies Drs, I wasn't aware of the links messing up on

    (without url tags) work?

Every one is fine. I don't know what you did at your end but
that's the way links are supposed to appear. I wish someone
at cyclingforums would do something about the fact that
their Usenet interface regularly buggers up the reference
ids so posts don't thread properly, as well as regularly
buggering up links so they are unusable.

FWIW, I'm seriously interested in the trekking bars at
Abbortsford Cycles. I went over to Richmond this afternoon
to check them out. Some points:

    - Unfortunately he only has black in stock, with no prospect
of getting any silver ones for some months. (Would it be
feasible to spray them silver or would paint last about
two seconds once you started bolting things on?)

    - What's not clear from the photo is the degree of drop from
"far side" to "near", they're not flat as they seem to be
although by no stretch of the imagination could they be
called drop bars. They strike me as being very much a poor
man's triathlon bar - exactly what I'm looking for.

    - The brakes/shifters/grips are supposed to be attached at
the near side (as per the photo at the bikeforums.net
link) but I reckon (and the guys there agreed with me)
that you could mount them forward. They didn't have any
set up on a bike so I could check them out in situ but
they said to come back on Monday as they were going to put
a pair on a second-hand MTB for people to try out.
Speaking of that image, what the hell has he wrapped
    around the bars?

    - The near side could be too close and therefore the seating
position too upright for some people. I've already changed
the angle of my stem to push my current handlebars forward
a couple of centimetres and the way these things wrap
around I personally don't fancy trying to, for example,
brake hard whilst sitting ridiculously upright. I won't
commit to this without actually trying them out but they
could necessitate a change to a longer stem for many
    people (including myself).

In my experience, spray painting them would be pointless.
Even when covered with something it would wear off rather
quickly. You really need them anodized. Maybe powdercoated
but I don't know much about its durability.

You'd have to check that you don't take away all your
hand-space at the far side of the bar. That shifter pod looks
like it would take up a fair portion of your grip room on the
    far side.

Just looks like well padded bar tape to me..

If you have a normal mtb flat bar, this setup looks like it
should be pushed out further with a longer stem. Guess it
depends on how stretched you currently are compared to
where you want to move to.

The thickness off the wrapping makes the whole thing look
    smaller than it
is. I'd love to spend a weekend playing around with it. I
really don't see the point of the way he's set it up
even though it's the recommended way. I've already got
a sit up and beg setup - I want to lean forward. You
can set them up so that you rest your forearms on the
    near side - hence the "poor man's tri-bar" - but I hate
to think of the consequences if you're leaning forward,
hands at the front and something happened and you neded
quick access to the brakes - how can you react quickly
enough with that setup? At the very least, for its
faults at least with my current setup my brake levers
    are always within easy reach.

Thanks for the info on the handlebar width guys, they might just be a bit too wide considering my current bars are about the 50cm mark! Getting the right stem setup would be tricky also.

As for spraypainting them would it be possible to sand them down to silver and then spraypaint? If the paint gets scratched it would be hard to tell.

I reckon I'd want them the exact opposite way around. Check

There are places which will anodize metal stuff for you.
    That'd probably be preferable.

I have a set of these on my touring/general bike, which I
bought in Germany while on tour. They're pretty heavy, but
    I love 'em.

Christies was selling them for a while, that's how the got
tandem them, and indeed, the stoker's are around
'backwards'. The only problem with this, is they have a bit
of a bend to them - a 3 dimensional bend. So if you lay
them flat, they aren't... this does limit the adjustability
    in reverse.

    cheers, -kt

    "reborn" hardtail commuter? Do tell...

    hippy

Nope, I got the last set - sorry!! I was impressed with the store, I have to admit... Not as cheap as I expected (lots of tasty but still quite pricey road bikes especially (Do you roadies change bikes every 6 months or something??!?)), but some nice surprises if you rummage around enough... I shall be returning to look for a set of rigid threadless forks for the commuter...

Speaking of which, yes, the hardtail commuter is a step along. These bars got installed yesterday and I've experimented with mounting the old vbrake levers and shifter pods up on the ends, which seems to work, if looking a little bit mutant with long loops of cable! First ride felt a bit weird, with the bar position now being so much narrower and further forward - a bit twitchy when pushing out of the saddle - but I think that's probably more something to just get used to (Is it??) The next steps will be knocking it down to one chainring and 7 spds to drop some weight and complexity and add some SKS mudguards for the approaching winter... But so far it's looking good and I'll be trialling it tomorrow. I can thank you guys for the motivation in rebuilding this one! (Although my experiment with the 50yr old Malvern Star 3spd didn't quite work so well! pity...)

With taping bikes.. is there a "good" way to do this? I've
thought about doing it to the GT as an alternative to
painting it, but electrical tape and I don't get on well.
Did you do yours when it was stripped? Mine has top-tube
brake cable that would make taping a PITA. I could take the
cable out, but the frayed ends are a real bugger to get
back into the cable outers.. Plus, there's that triple-
triangle design, which is very fiddly for taping.. and I'm
    inherently lazy..???

He's not getting silver ones in for ages, not unless people
sudenly buy all his stock before Friday and he does another
order instead of in six months time. I've been looking at
the Modolo site as an alternative because they have several
variations but it's too damn hard to tell the often subtle
differences from those images. The Australian Modolo
distributor doesn't keep the trekking bars in stock anyway.

I don't think auro bars would fit on my current bar,
I'd have to swap it for a straight bar. But I have

This is difficult, as most of my bikes tend to swap bits and morf into other bikes. Do have photo's of various pedallys in various stages of assembly/disassembly. Good idea Kingsley, maybe after all these years, it's time to get a geocities site etc.

If I get a website together I'll post the details here at some point in the future.

I bought their last set of silver "Race Sticks" today. That
leaves a "titanium" set (not black as it says on the site).
It's a pretty colour but I don't know what it would go with.
I also bought a silver Trek flat bar to replace my riser,
mainly because I simply don't have any room left to bolt the
brackets onto but partly because risers are just silly. I
had a play with the new bits just to get a bit of a feel for
how everything fits together and it appears I'm in serious
need of some shims. The bit that clamps onto the handlebar
is sized for a drop bar and the flat bar, being a MTB bar,
tapers away from the centre (the ends are only 22mm). The
forces involved naturally preclude rubber shims, so I'll pop
up to MBC Prahran tomorrow and get some aluminium ones. It's
    all most exciting.

A couple of points of interest:

    - The reason they're in the Clearance bin is because almost
as soon as they were released the relevant racing
authorities banned them, so the only people buying them
these days are recreational riders like me who need a bit
of assistance dealing with the headwinds on Beach Road.
They are indeed a copy of the Cinelli originals but
    considerably cheaper.

    - The "BBB" brand name comes from "Bill's Bike Babes".
Obviously they were hoping to appeal to a certain market
but needless to say those stickers will be coming off the
bars before the new setup leaves the driveway.
