up to week 8, a 28 minute run, and it's sore. I'm resting it and using ice,
as well as an anti inflammatory gel. I've switched to using the elliptical
trainer to keep my legs strong without impact, and can use it comfortably
for half an hour.
I was planning on doing a 3km fun run on Sunday, and wondered whether half
hour on the elliptical trainer would stand me in good stead. I haven't run
for over a week, and when I stopped, I was doing just over 4km, so I'm
hoping to be able to go the distance, depending on how my shin feels.
Thanks

What is the condition of your shoes? That could be one issue. Also,
what type of surface do you usually run on? Pavement and concrete are
very unforgiving and can accelerate an injury like you have. For shin
splints I have a couple of things I do, above what you are already
doing.
1. Change to a softer running surface. Going to the park and running
around the park on the grass may not be the most exciting running you
will ever do but it might help.
2. I like to dig out the soccer ball and kick it around in the
backyard or at the park. They say soccer is one of the best things to
prevent shin splints and many "experts" think or have done studies
that conclude that soccer players get shin splints less than most
other sports.
