  1. Can I put a year 2000 Campy Record Crankset onto a Shimano square tapered BB?

    Thanks, Kenny Lee

Brought my used Record cranks to a buddy who wants to buy them off of me. He has Shimano square
tapered cranks. They went on just fine.

    Taper Compatibility
    Campagnolo = ISO Taper ( ’94 & later Campagnolo cranks )

Compact = JIS Taper ( Low profile cranks )

Standard = JIS & older non Low Profile cranks ( ’93 & earlier Campagnolo cranks )

You can if you want to wreck a couple of hundred bucks worth of cranks.

No, Shimano doesn't make a bb that short. It would have to be 98 mm in Shimano tapers. Want to buy a
    Chours bb for $35?

Ya can but i don't recommend it since the shimano BB taper is larger in mm and can distort, enlarge
or othwerwise goon up the Campagnolo crank. Also the chainline may not be very good.

Installed the Record cranks onto the Shimano BB. Began testing the shifting while the bike was on
the stand. At first it didn't want to shift up onto the big ring. After messing around with the
limit screws the shifting was the same as with his previous cranks. There was chain rub in the big-
big and the small-small combos but, he said he had the same problem with his Shimano cranks on and
you shouldn't be in those combos anyway. I figure if it shifts fine and my friend is happy well...

He'll be happy 'til they work loose and won't tighten properly. Shimano BB taper is JIS, Europeans
use ISO. Wonder why Stronglight offer their BBs in both options? 'Cos they're different!

Why did you ask the question if you weren't going to follow any of the (very) knowledgeable advice
on this newsgroup anyway? It's obvious that you either haven't been reading the reply threads, or
    you actually hate your "buddy."

Hmmm, since the Campagnolo Record need a smaller taper 102mm, I wonder what shimano BB you used.
I'll bet the chainline is 'poor' at best, even using a 103mm spindle.

The bike was a NOS early 90's late 80's of which the name I can't recall. He measured the spindle
length and it measured 113mm. I think the bike has RSX 600 shifters. But again I'm not sure.

i'm gonna sneak in a question on this thread.

does anyone happen to know what tapers the following cranks use?

    1. early '90s miche ? road crank 144bcd (it's such a campy knock-off i'd guess campy but ...)
    2. early '90s suntour superbe pro road crank 144bcd

    thanks,

    thanks,

My guess is the same as yours for the Miche

If you actually have the Suntour crank to hand, you may find a JIS symbol on the back of it, my
1980s SR cranks (also 144bcd, strangely enough) have it, in which case I'd have to guess it's a JIS
    taper! Kinky Cowboy*

The Ofmega cranks I installed on a Nuovo Record bottom bracket stuck out more than the Campys I took
off it. Not sure if that helps... ;-)

Did you sight the chainline? With a 113 there would be lots of room between inner ring and
chainstay. Agree with Peter, it's unlikely the chainline was even close.

which is odd. the bike (a track bike) when i bought it had a dura-ace bb and a miche crank. i've put
thousands and thousands of miles on this way and eventually switched the bb to a shimano UN72
cartridge bb and put on thousands and thousands more. all with apparently no damage to the crank.

it is possible the crank actually does take a shimano taper which is why i ask. i've never
    known for sure.

i also have a spare suntour superbe pro crank around that i was going to throw on so i was curious
about that .. rivendell claims that at least for the 130bcd version a special taper is required.

    rivendellbicycles.com12072.html

so i never put it on. miche works fine anyhow.

no such symbol, unfortunately. the only writing is "Suntour Japan BB 170" which mostly i
    already knew.

All we know was that the spindle was square and the hole was square and when mated together they
were nice and snug. We don't know what a good chainline is. If that means that no matter what gear
combo you're in you don't get any chain rub sound then it's probably not good because we have the
chain rubbing against the FD cage in the big-big and small-small combos. Anyway, this is my friend's
first road bike and he paid something like 300 bucks for it and from his perspective "if it gets you
there" then the chainline must be good.

I'll post a road trial report after our Saturday club ride.

If it's only rubbing in the big/big and small/small combinations than you're probably ok in that
regard as you shouldn't ride in those gears anyway. The real questions are, will the fit stay nice
and snug and is your chain meeting the cassette in such a way as to increase wear on both.

Good points. Only time will tell.
