  1. Now that my Dahon Speed TR has effectively made my Giant Tourer
redundant (I can no longer be bothered taking a non-folder on a train),
I'm looking into swapping the functions of a couple of my bikes. The
tourer will become my commuting bike, and my current commuter (Raleigh
"Vitesse" (in need of some repair) is destined to become a
    fast-tourer/audax type machine.

For the moment, the tourer needs nothing doing to it, except for
swapping the 40C tyres for some 28C which I have lying around.

The Raleigh needs a little more work and/or upgrading as follows:

    1) Replace the crank spider. It is currently a Sora triple but is quite
    nastily bent.

    2) Replace the Sora STI shifters with Campag so that I can use a
handlebar bag again. These STIs will eventually get transferred to the
tourer (which currently has bar-end shifters)

    3) Upgrade the single pivot calipers to dual pivot (I'll need deep drop
    models)

I quite like the idea of compact double chainsets but have no problem
    replacing with another triple

    Current transmission is as follows:

Sora long cage (GS) rear mech
    Sora triple front mech
    Sora 3x7 STI shifters
    Shimano HG 7spd cassette
    Generic HG compatible chain
    Sora triple chainset (52/42/30)
    Shimano tapered square BB
105 rear hub (8spd, currently holding a 7spd cassette plus spacer)

Given that I WANT to change the chainset, that I WANT to use campag
shifters, and that if possible I DON'T yet want to swap the rear wheel
what options have I got? What other components will I be forced to
change if I decide upon going for a compact double chainset?

    My thoughts so far are:

Since a double chainset doesn't require any indexing, a campag shifter
will work, but I'm not sure if the Sora front mech will like the bigger
    difference between the two chainrings.

Will a 10spd campag cassette fit on a shimano 8spd freehub?

Sorry, that's lots of questions in an illogical order, but I don't have
a final plan due to insufficient knowledge of my options...

At a minimum you would need to change to 10 speed ergo shifters and shimano
8 speed cassette. I have this combination and it works fine.

The new Campagnolo QS shifters are indexed at the front, which makes a
triple more fiddly but a double should be OK.

Read the "Shimergo" page on the CTC website.

Bear in mind that 2007 Campag front shifters have changed, so only Chorus
and Record use the "trimming" mode, the others are direct like Shimano.

From the above, my suggestion would be:
Campag double compact front chainset, campag front derailleur, Campag Ergo
10 speed levers (new QS will be fine as you're using Campag front end). Then
8 Speed Shimano rear cassette, Shimano rear derailleur. Would have to
investigate whether an 8 speed or 9 speed chain is best (to fit through
front derraileur). If an 8 will go, I'd use that. In either case, new bits
all round, including some new jockey wheels for the rear derailleurs.

The new Campagnolo QS shifters are indexed at the front, which makes a
triple more fiddly but a double should be OK.

Stock of older (pre 2007) non-QS models is still available. With older
sub-Chorus models there's an advantage with the rear shifters as well. They
allow shifting to more than one smaller sprocket in one go with one push of
the thumb button. (Chorus and Record 2007 retains this feature). On the
other hand, they need their indexing springs replaced after a while. I
doubt the new simpler design ever needs servicing.

No Campag cassettes fit any Shimano hubs.

A Campag-spaced Marchisio cassette could be fitted - but these are quite
    expensive. See www.anysystem.de

Dr Fang's solution solution sounds good.

If you can point me to a supplier I'd be very grateful.

I could do with a set of mid-range pre-QS 10speed Ergo shifters for one of
my bikes which is likely to get a transmission rebuild in the autumn.

Unfortunately, telephone call this morning revealed that the Veloce's have
    all gone.
Chorus still in stock, but too expensive for my tastes.

Suggestions of other people with stocks of pre-QS 10-speed mid-range Ergo
    shifters still sought.

Must admit that I hadn't looked around just before I posted my first reply
about stocks still being available as I was thinking back to a few months
ago when several dealers still had them, including Parker International.
Shame they're getting so scarce already.

eBay seller "Number1bikebits" has 06 Veloce - but look through feedback left
for and by him to see that he can be most unpleasant and unfair if
    anything's wrong with an item.

An eBay seller in the States also has a pair - item number 160106772505

    Thanks again Pete.
I must revise my Ebay search methods; I found neither of the above in my
searching. I'll ponder if either seller is a viable option for me.

I failed to win a set of Record on Ebay earlier today; end price was fair,
but as I'm really after Veloce quality, I'm tending towards Veloce pricing.

Perhaps another day will work out for me.
