: By the way, if your Ergo isn't marked "9 SPEED" you'll need a pre 2001 : rear mech for best results, if you ever want to replace it.
Have you come across any actual problems from mixing and matching pre/post 2001 ergos and shifters? I haven't seen any from running a 2000 rear mech with 2003 shifters.

I personally had indexing problems when using 2001 9-speed shifters with an 8-speed mech--which I believe has the same geometry as pre 2001 9-speed mechs, and I know 9sp cable pull and ratio changed in 2001 (hard fact). Various subtle factors will affect how well combinations work, including condition of mech.
Note I say "for best results" rather than claiming it being /essential/ to match mech to shifter.

Mine say Mirage on the brake hoods. Is it likely that I've got Mirage hoods, but Veloce levers? Do they get mixed up like that?
Maybe when your bike was being built they still had stocks of alloy Mirage levers in the factory to use up - it's not unheard of for bikes to change spec. from that in the current catalogue during the course of the year, or even between individual batches.

I know the cable pull etc changed, but I've never had any problems mixing 9-speed rear mechs and shifters. I have known problems mixing 8 speed mechs and 9 speed shifters but I really couldn't say what year each of the bits was from.
