He was such a generous and humane man.

I wrote to him a few months ago, to say that I was really sorry to hear
about his illness - it wasn't long after he had his MS diagnosis last
year - and to say how much I valued and appreciated his bike advice, and
to wish him.

I got a reply 30 minutes later, thanking *me*, and saying that MS wasn't
all that bad

If you haven't already seen it, his piece on "The Bright Side of MS" at
<http://sheldonbrown.com/ms> is classic Sheldon. It's funny, wise and
indefatigable. It's also instantly and enduringly likeable, just like
him.

Maybe at some point in the future we can arrange a uk.rec.cycling ride
in honour of him, and perhaps in aid of MS research or care.

A very sad day.

I only knew him from his website, but his love of tinkering with all
things bicycling related and the ability to express his enjoyment and
knowledge has given so many of us the confidence to try it ourselves.

Let's remember while we're at it some of the other pioneers like him: Jobst
Brandt is one of them, John Forester another.

We really should start a site that lists the contributors to cycling and
work on maintaining it.

I'm very sorry to hear this; my best wishes go to his family.

As others have said, he was always very open and friendly. I remember
emailing him a couple of times, about a non-bike-related issue: he would
respond immediately and positively. I wish I'd met him.

When I needed a new wheel it was Sheldon's articles on wheel building
which persuaded me that I could do one myself. Did so and the wheel
was still going strong when the back brakes eventually wore through
the rim several thousands of km later.

He has touched thousands all over the World. The web has lost one of
its giants.

Having been away from Usenet for a few days, all I can say is I'm
desperately sorry. He was a great and generous contributor to the sum of
cycling knowledge available on the Net, and will be greatly missed.

This is truly terrible news. There must be few cyclists who haven't
benefited from Sheldon's wisdom, directly or indirectly. He really
will always have the answer.

A health problem which makes you less mobile usually results in you
putting on weight. My wife has rheumatoid arthritis and is now heavier
than me. Too much weight and the hart becomes over-strained.

I used his gear calculator when I was planning on my pilgrimage to
Santiago in 2001 - very useful.

I mourn his passing, the world is a sadder place , as the say...
