"Sheldon's wife Harriet sent out mail this morning saying that Sheldon Brown died of a massive heart attack last night."
Sad news - he'll be missed.

Already being missed :-(
I think the quoted bit in the original post summed it up nicely, "It's hard to know what to say:".

I just came across this a few moments ago. In a little while I'll think of something appropriate to say, maybe. Just now, I can't.

As everyone has said, he'll be greatly missed.
The Bike Show is planning a tribute programme and invites audio comments:http://thebikeshow.net/2008/02/05/pay-your-tributes-to-the-mighty-sheldon-brown/ "Sheldon Brown, the mighty, generous and wonderfully eccentric repository of so much bicycle knowledge, has died."

A huge help and inspiration to (presumably) thousands like myself who never knew him. Sadly too late to thank him now.

I'll remember him every time I clean my chain with the "Sheldon Shake".
A sad day.

The world is smaller.
I lost my father two weeks ago, I know how his family will be feeling.

I'm shocked and saddened to hear this news. I knew Sheldon had MS but not any heart problems.
Atkins diet.
Very unfortunate. He seems to have had the wrong end of the stick, these last few years. -- David Damerell <[email hidden]> Kill the tomato! Today is Epithumia, February - a weekend.

Me too, having lost my oldest son last October. Sudden death is hard to take. Heartfelt sympathy to Sheldon's family, and to you too, Guy.

Very sad news. Sheldon and the late Ken Kifer have both been an inspiration and help over the years.

That's a bugger. He was a very helpful chap - anyone with a high traffic website normally sends fairly terse replies due to the volume of email recieved. Sheldon always sent very detailed and helpful replies in my experience.

Dunno why, but when I saw this thread with just his name, I sort of knew what was coming....
He was a really helpful guy, his website is legendary. There should be a Sheldon Brown wiki site memorial to keep his light ablaze.
Certainly I hope that it doesn't disappear ... (starts making a backup just in case).
Thanks SB

Googling for "site:sheldonbrown.com Atkins" finds a few mentions, though none very recent.
