I would think that was the least of his worries. "Dear God. Thank you for not letting me crash that
badly; so far anyway...."

It was a temporary measure to keep the hand alive if I remember correctly. The old forums are gone I
guess. I can't find the post that went with that pic.

Here is the guy's explanation of what happened:
Okay, here goes.
I run a B&B (and former tour service) in Tucson. Two summers ago, July 18, 2001, I was pulling weeds
in my driveway. The phone rang. I jumped up and ran to answer it. We have a French door that I
thought was open. I ran up and hit the door with my hand on the wood surrounding the windows.
Because of monsoon (our wet season) the door's corner was a little swelled and didn't swing open
like I thought. My arm went through the glass, with my hand in a position like I was gesturing to
stop, (palm forward. When my forearm hit the wood cross brace, the door opened. Upon opening, the
glass, (not safety glass)ran down my bones and scooped out ALL CONNECTIVE TISSUE, ALL TENDONS AND
LIGAMENTS, EXCISED TWO OUT OF THREE ARTERIES AND CUT THE THIRD. My hand was nearly amputated. My
girlfriend stuck a rag inside my arm, tied another one around the outside and we ran to a neighbor
(ex-war, ex-20 year parmedic). I know running could have pumped the rest of the blood out of me, but
we didn't have a choice. At the time, I just wanted to go to sleep. From here, the actual immediate
process gets a bit fuzzy.
Afte keeping me alive, the surgeries started. Because I had actually cut out EVERYTHING, there was
no blood supply and everytime they tried to fix it, the hole in my arm would die back and get
bigger. After a year of surgeries, they wanted to amputate my hand. It was dying. After my only time
of swearing at he doctor, you can take my hand when it turns f*&king green , he said we could try
something else, but zero gurantees any of it will work.
What he picture shows is the outer part of my quad, filleted with the artery intact, wrapped in a
strip of skin cut from my knee to my hip. That little meat sausage is surgically tied into my wrist,
feeding the srea blood from my leg artery. I laid in ICS/Burn/Skin Ward, (my second home, been there
MONTHS total) for a month with my leg attached to my arm. Then, they surgically sever the artery,
leaving the sausage part another week. Then, if your hand doesn't die, they just cut out the meat
sausage. The procedure is called a Pedicle Flap , it was successful, I kept my hand. I've had
several more precedures since summer '02. Just restructured part of my thumb to give me a lttle
opposition with the tendons and muscle groups from the back-side of my hand. 14 procedures so far,
two more to go this May.
I ride with all the controls on the right and use velcro to hold on to the bar on the left. CJ

Honestly, gory or not, it's amazing that medical technology can produce such seemingly-impossible
feats, no matter how weird or freaky it may seem.
On the other hand, my house will be machined out of solid billet aluminum. Yes, the whole thing.
No glass. 😉

I agree completely. I'd be dead without good medical technology. I'd just rather read about it than
see the actual gore. Makes me queasy. Hollywood gore doesn't bother me, but the real thing does.

Doesn't make for very good windows and I can't imagine the insulation properties would be all that
great, but hey - It's your house. I think I'll just try not to put my hand through any windows. Post
a pic when you're done machining. I'd like to see that.
Matt
PS - watch out for lightning!

You sure they didn't say "corrugated" aluminium? Just checking. :-)

That pretty rad!
And I thought it was Photo Shopped or some funky penis relocation procedure/doctor screw-up.

Do I dare ask why someone would want their penis relocated?

it is not his penis. read the clues right on the page. "Had to give up part of leg." they do it to
bring blood flow into his hand. the thing that looks like a penis is actually a chunk from his leg.
there are blood vessels either wrapped up in, or in the skin itself. the skin is to protect them
from the elements (like taking a shower).
besides, if they took his member, why would he have to cover up his crotch? ;-)
