I have a vague memory of a story about cardboard cutout American cops
reducing thefts in convenience stores. Searching for it I did find

cardboard fake camera in a bid to put the brakes on the speeders

approaching drivers of a real speed camera at the spot. The device,
which is made out of a cardboard box, painted yellow and taped to a
pole, was installed by two boys, 14 and 13 years old."

I think it's been used successfully in the UK as well, like inflatable
police cars on bridges etc etc.

did they have to take down the fake camera?

I think we've done this one recently. If the "camera" is on private
property you can usually get away with it.

Seen 'retired' police cars c/w flashing blue light positioned at crucial
road-side points in Japan. Also lifesized plastic policemen.

Can't see such things lasting longer than about 5 minutes here.
