    No. I'm a scooterist.

Sorry Lotte.. You ARE a motorcyclist

If it is over 50cc or has a design speed of over 60km/h then it is a
motorcycle and you must have a motorcycle licence to ride it. If not, then
it is classed as a moped and you can ride it with a car licence. Or you can
get a moped only licence at 16 (in WA).

    Theo

Its still a motorcycle. They usually get around the law by making the
engine capacity 49 cc as you would. and its got bad brakes and bad
acceleration. Certainly couldnt outbrake whatis names commode.. But
its still a motorcycle. Its a cycle and it has a (Choke splutter ROTFL)
    motor

So Lotte is a motorcyclist regardless. 🙂

    Ha! Gemma, you're a hoot!

I gotta get some pics taken. I can reach about 85kmh in the 330m velodrome
before it gets a bit hairy - it's not the smoothest drome out there! :-)

Darn, what's the chance of two girls, in the same small cycling forum that this is, writing in the same thread, having the same scoot, an unusual one that is, a 180cc hootscoot. 🙂 Gilera runner sp180. You know you can get it close to 45 hp? It has some serious hop up kits to it if you want. But then I reckon reliability and fuel consumption will get nasty. But sooo much fun. 🙂

Handy for you that Velo Bikes is right next to scootopia. have you
seen those big ass 650cc suzuki burgman scooters? They are

    massive....

But they don't feel it. I've ridden one a few times and just cruising
    down
the highway, look down at the speedo and see that I'm doing 140km/h.
    My
1100cc Guzzi feels a lot faster at that speed.

    Theo

Hi Theo. Out come all the closet motorbicyclists - even Guzzi riders.
Bicycles outnumber the motorbikes in my garage now at 5-4 🙂

I'm contemplating getting a bike license. It strikes me that using the
transport that suits the needs is the way to go. Cycle where possible (most
journeys). Public transport where appropriate. Car where needed for multiple
people/heavy loads. Motorbikes for one or two people/light loads over longer
distances or where time constraints apply.

Your mind is probably made up but I'd like to discourage you from riding
a motorbike. Everyone I know that has had an accident on a motorbike has
had a BAD accident. I know they're fun, I have a motorbike license
myself. I've owned a Ducati, a BMW and some other bikes, including off
road, but the consequences of accidents are appalling. Please reconsider.

They're pretty slow. Honda do a gorgeous retro looking thing, but they
reckon it's really gutless. Apparently the two stroke engines are
easier to maintain/rebuild as well. The mechanic at the place where we
got this one reckons we should get 40,000km out of it before it needs a
rebuild. He's biased, but I'd be happy with 20,000km.

    Well... yeah... but... 2 strokes:
Use much more fuel... say 1.5 - 2 times for a bike of the same capacity
    in normal usage.
Need rebuilding nearly as often as 4-strokes need basic topend servicing
Pollute orders of magnitude more than 4 strokes.
Have a very unfriendly torque distribution across the rev range.
Make that gawd awful lawnmower noise (still having nightmares from the
    incessant drone in northern Italy)
Need oil as a consumable. Expensive 2 stroke oil, and quite a lot of it.
    Are generally less reliable.

But they are simple, cheap, light and powerful, I'll admit ;-)

But Claes...... generally on a work day all a landcrusier is achieveing is transporting 1 person from their home to their place of work. That is alot of fuel and energy to move a human from A to B that could be done by a 50cc scooter in the same time (not including highway travel) for alot less petrol, materials etc. Yeah I know they burn oil as well as petrol but it is very small quantities in comparison to the petrol required.

    What's wrong with a bicycle from A to B?
No fuel used. No fscking annoying buzzing noise. Scooters are still petrol-burning buzz boxes and you can't carry anything in/on them, like you can with a car. They are annoying as hell in NL, screaming through otherwise lovely town square sunsets or using the bike paths. Only good thing about them is when I get to draft a slow one..

Ok, my commute is 35km each way. I'm a big fat [censored] and can't do that more than 3 days per week at the moment. Paulie and I share a car, but on days that I use the car, I'm required to travel to the train station, then catch the train for 30 minutes to work. I don't get a seat often and remember, I'm a fat [censored] - my legs don't like holding my fat ass up, and I'm surrounded by dodgy people (this is Queensland afterall). Parking in the city is upwards of $14 per day and frankly, my job as a fat [censored] secretary isn't worth that.

We'd have bought a second car, but you don't get much car for $3000.

    Does that answer your question??

Yes, but it's not a reason for me. I'm 100kg remember, I used to stand on the train for 45min+ and walk 5-10min each end. "Toughen up, princess" as someone used to say..

Ride 3 days, train 2 days? How far is the train station from you? I lived 10min from a station because I didn't have a car. Walking ain't that hard. More people should think of that when moving house. Stupid Melbourne with it's 'car-only' suburbs, really pisses me off..

You already have the machine so there's no point to this argument, but it doesn't stop me thinking that there are alternatives.

That's what I currently do. I dislike catching the train more than you'll ever know. Ever been to a Queensland train station? They're always littered with dodgy people.

How far is the train station from you?

    11km.

    I lived 10min from a station because I didn't have a car. Walking ain't that hard.

I realise that. I have a dog you know...

It's probably not that hard when you move house. Try buying a house for less than $300k in Brisbane that's not an old, falling apart [censored]. And when you do, let me know.

You already have the machine so there's no point to this argument, but it doesn't stop me thinking that there are alternatives.

I don't *have* it as such. I don't get it until Saturday. Of course there are alternatives. Heaps! I could go out and spend $15k on a new small car and pay the copious amounts of registration, insurance, repayments etc. I could even just [censored] well walk, but I'd be walking all day. I could start whoring myself out at night instead of working during the day, but that would be boring considering the quality of men around. But don't worry, I'm going to buy a Prado instead. That way I can run all the bigot Aussie men around over.

Does anyone else in this country give a flying [censored] about pollution? I believe there are few and it shows.... why shouldn't I just be a good old Australian? My "What it Means to be an Australian Citizen" book sent to me by Philip Rudduck says nothing about that. Ah that's alright. I'm used to being stuck on the side of the road with no light on my pushie - why should it be any different on a scooter?

    I saved about $10 on fuel yesterday. I did a 140km ride.
Actually, in thinking about it, I probably spent less on Mars Bars then
I did on petrol. I wonder if I can convert my car to run on Mars Bars?

The torque distribution is the same thing as when I said "you have to rev the [censored] off them" Meaning they have very little power low down, you have to rev it hard. Pedal to the metal all times. 🙂

depends on how far A is from B.

For example, a previous commute was 50km, with some big hills. Took an
hour each way by motorcycle, be a lot more by pushbike.
