Over the last 3 days I rode from Fort William to Callander the route
being the West Highland Way to Bridge of Orchy then through Glen Lyon.
A superb 3 days with perfect weather and scenery. The WHW is well
documented so I won't mention it any further other than to say I would
recommend doing it north to south if biking it. The vast majoity of
the walkers we passed were going south-north so it made life easier
than constantly coming up behind walkers.
The main reason for this post is to mention that altough not shown on
any maps I could find there is now a bulldozed track he full way round
loch Lyon. The maps don't show any tracks at the west end of the loch.
In fact from Auch Glen right through t Loch Lyon dam is now easil
ridable. I chose the track on the south side of the loch it is almost
level and has a good smooth gravel surface - much better than the west
highland way.
As an aside I used a Specialized Hardrock fitted with a rear rack
which worked OK but I'm thinking of passng that bike on to my son who
broke his bike on the trip and replacing it. So the options are either
another modified mountain bike or is there something better for this
style of touring I do? It tends to be between 1/4 to 3/4 off road
primarily landrover tracks so I thought about maybe one of the Thorn
models might be a better compromise between speed on road and
strength off road. Any ideas?
