That's certainly what I was taught.

I think ND is complaining that the drivers seem to be performing a
good overtaking manoeuvre on something about 15m in front of him (ie
they are still moving futher to the right after thay have passed).
I've also noticed this, but can't say if it's a recent thing or not.

I figured that out eventually. :)

Maybe they only remember they're supposed to leave more room once
they've started to pass. Marginally better than not thinking bikes need
more room, I suppose.

in many ways i feel that pelcon crossing are better than light controled
crossing.

true, though do get a good one, localy with the light between bushy park
and kingston bridge. where some cyclist instead of waiting at the lights
cross on to the other side of the road and ride the wrong way until they
can turn onto the pavment. sadly this isn't just one persons bad idea.

but in heavy traffic people do seem to stop thinking and do some dumb
things.

Damn, this BS comes round every few weeks like a broken record. Can't we
have an acrhived copy to point people up so we don't have to waste time
recirculating hot air.

I've never been rear-ended, but have had "What the f*** have you stopped
for?" just after a squeal of locked tyres.

I had a similar incident recently with a bus. After I stopped at an
amber light it pulled up very abruptly beside me. Presently I noticed
the driver seemed to be getting agitated. He was shaking his head and
carrying on a conversation with himself. When I looked across at him
he shouted that he had been about to go through the light and was
obviously angry with me. I simply pointed out that he amber means stop
too, and asked him if his bus driver's test included the rules for
traffic lights. Then he went sheepish for some reason.

I'd had plenty of time to come to a safe stop and so had he, but I
suspect he had come fairly close to rear-ending me on that occasion.

There used to be an auto-faq thingy run by Simon Brooke, as mentioned by
a Mr Guy Chapman of this parish over at:

http://chapmancentral.demon.co.uk/Web/public.nsf/Documents/uk_rec_cycling

There are mini-FAQs there too, though none answering the FA "what
sort of license" Q.

Sadly, the urcautofaq seems to be 404 now. I think the project ought to
be revived, possibly with some sort of monthly auto-posting system as
with other groups.
