    Not an MD but have had a broken back, discs don't swell. They can be misplaced and bulge but
    cannot 'swell'.

    Don't be so sure of yourself. Interlaminar tears and avulsions can lead to swelling, just like
    anywhere else. However, I don't think this is what OP was talking about.
