No, I do not think so. Vandeman needs to be heard on many cycling groups. He
is presenting a point of view which is not often heard among cyclists. He
does not interfere with any other threads, so what is your complaint? RBS is
a cesspool of drivel from the word go. You would be hard pressed to describe
what that group is all about other than nonsensical trivia.

But I am in favor of live and let live. Vandeman, Curtiss and I in no way
interfere with anything that is taking place on RBS or any other newsgroup.
We stay on our own threads. Please see a head shrink if you do not
understand any of this. My patience is not inexhaustible.

And what the hell is a Sierra Club leader doing encouraging mountain biking
on my sacred hiking trails?

And where the hell did you see me encouraging mountain bike riding on
your sacred hiking trails?

The Sierra Club long ago sold out its conservation credentials, in
order not to upset its members, many of whom are in the Club only to
promote their personal form of recreation, regardless of impacts. It's
too bad they can't even be honest about it.

I also own a couple of guns, so by your logic I encourage murder,
right?

You seem to have a real issue with anonymity, but who is to say that you
are really "Edward Dolan"? Surely you're smart enough to know that its
just a matter of whatever name & e-mail you fill into your newsreader.
There is no authenticity, so claims of it are either specious or naive.

So why be anonymous? Well a couple of points/examples:

Vandeman has a history of telephoning and harassing employers and family
of people who disagree with him. It was this behavior that got him
stripped of his local Sierra Club committee chairmanship (and banned from
holding such positions anywhere). A few years ago I read a number of his
references and cited several examples of how his "research" is based on
out-of-context quoting. He didn't do anything to make his writings
relevant or honest, but he certainly did get angry.

I have also been threatened by another Usenet kook (who used a first and
last name, as if that actually means anything), to get his gun and "come
and find" me when I expressed my disapproval of his repeated use of
sexually-explicit language regarding the grade-school daughter of another
newsgroup user.

Usenet tends to attract some real kooks, and it simply isn't important
enough to cause any worry of real life 'retribution'. At least a small
degree of anonymity make sense.

Everyone in the world knows that no one would make up a name like Edward
Dolan. It is as real as it is possible to get - just like I am. But no
matter your name, there is never any excuse for expressing idiotic
obscenities. Such human scum as cc do not belong on Usenet.

I really do despair of Usenet. I think it is going to go the way of the Dodo
Bird precisely because of the kind of problems that are associated with
scoundrels like cc. In the future there will be nothing but moderated types
of forums.

I don't believe any of the above. That is not my impression of Vandeman at
all. It is OK to get angry; it is not OK to get personal. What happens in
cyberspace stays in cyberspace.

BB, I truly do not understand such behavior. Usenet ought to be nothing but
a playing field for intellectuals and words are our only weapons of choice.
Anyone who takes it any further than that is, like you said, a kook and
should not be on Usenet in the first place.

Agreed. I may follow your advice on this as I seem to occasionally run
across some kooks and crazies myself. I am already contemplating what name I
shall choose for myself. Maybe EE! But it goes against the grain for any of
us to want to be anonymous. My God, we shall all of us soon enough be dead
and in our graves where we can truly be anonymous. Just another name on a
headstone.

Of course! That is all that guns are used for.
