We reached grid ref 095168 and got no further. There was a section
    where I
had to straddle the ridge then could not see a safe way down to climb the
next rock tower, which itself looked scary. My companion had already
    given
up and after some though ( about my kids !! ) I decided to go back.
I will return in the summer :-)

Less talk about 'failure' - you didn't have to call out the MRT, and you
still have all your useful bits intact! IMO 'failure' is pressing on
when it's pretty obvious you shouldn't be. Many places were really not
designed with winter in mind. 8>.

I once wrote a very basic guide on hillwalking after being out with some
folk that were woefully ill-equipped and unprepared. Part of the guide
was to list (my) priorities for any day on the hills, the first three being:

    1. Get back down safely
    2. Enjoy yourself
    3. Get to the top

Failure would be if priority number 1 wasn't achieved. Not achieving 2
or 3 might be disappointing, but still not failure. (Of course, by this
definition a 'successful' hill-walk could be achieved by never leaving
the sofa. It's not an exhaustive list.)

Naturally, others might have different priorities.

    Colin

Sounds like liberal lefty mumbo jumbo to me.

Natural Selection - still working after all this time! :-)

In your case, I'd probably make an exception and agree. In the case of
the original poster, and most other posters here, I'd prefer them alive,
wiser, and able/willing to try again.

Nothing wrong in backing off routes, I backed off "minus two" a little while
ago, (bad ice and too much spin drift) but I didn't come home thinking I was
fantastic for turning tale, the failure still burns inside!
