They sure are. Read, for example, _A Primer of Conservation Biology_,
by Richard B. Primack, and then come back after you know something.
Pay particular attention to the discussion of habitat fragmentation.
And the discussion of how the presence of humans drives away the
wildlife. (Sorry, I'm not aware of a translation into words of one
syl-la-ble.)

It's odd, around here it seems to work the other way around. I go
mountain biking at the weekends and train on roads during the week. The
trails I mountain bike on have been purpose built and maintained by a
big group of keep bikers, they have received permission of the local
Foresty Commision. The trail covers about a 5 square mile area of the
wood land and people rarely deviate from this (when they do it's blocked
up by the trail builders).

With money from the car parking (well out of the war of the rest of the
wood land), the Café and sponsors the Foresty Commision keeps the rest
of the area in check, an area probably 20x the area of the track I ride
around. It's a sad fact that nature reserves today cost money but they
do, this sort of funding is perfect.

The Council have recently decided to build a big walking path through
the middle of the trail, probably using the money they recieved from all
the cyclists (the car park is always crammed). The area is already
covered in walking routes. Ho hum.

I work as a programmer during the week, it's nice having a blast through
the woods to get the blood pumping. Still, it's probably greedy of me to
ask this. I'm sure the selfless walkers never deviate from their many
tracks, I can't say for sure as I rarely see any, they're normally
strolling down the middle of the cycling only trail when I do. Rules
don't actually seem to apply to ramblers and they REALLY resent moving
when they're in the way.

More elitist BS. "I'm so advanced that none of you can undestand me!"
Heard from lots of really pathetic people who've failed miserably at
life, and their attempts to drag others down.
I'd bet your one of those folks who think a colossal plague, or war
that wipes out most of humanity would be a great thing too.
It's really too bad that loonies like you are actually taken
seriously by some people. Let's just mandate that nay technology post
1700 is banned on pain of death, the population is to be reduced by
75% and those selected are to be rounded up and composted.
I can see you supporting that agenda.

Hey, that's just how it works here. Our Parks and Wildlife service considers
mountain bikers to be a significant and very welcome constituency.

Yep, you are an eco-terrorist wannabe version of George Bush who is
on his own deluded crusade, and noone else's opinion or research
matters because YOU are god, or God has given you your mission.
Just like his buddies he only had actual conversaqtion and exchange
of ideas with people of like mind.
We need to be saved from both you, your friends, him, and his
friends.

For someone who claims to be the worlds most excellent genius, or
something like that, Mikey's ability to respond intelligently is
pretty weak. This is understandable in real time conversation, as that
isn't a skill that everyone has, but "yawn" as a cogent response after
given plenty of time for consideration of the discussion, just shows
what he is as a human being.
He's Wiley Coyote, "The Worlds Most Excellent Genius". Just proof
that in many cases PHD stand for "Piled Higher and Deeper".
