The most common response I get is people staring but then looking away
as soon as I look at them. It's like watching me ride fulfills some
guilty pleasure for them.
My favorite response though happened today. I decided to ride down the
steepest (offroad) hill on my university's campus. I live in a flat
area, so it's only about 20 feet high. But it's steep enough that most
people wouldn't ride a bike down it. Since I had stepped in the wet
grass, on the way down the hill my foot slipped off the plastic pedal,
and I bailed, landing nicely in the soft grass. All the students around
paused, and two girls in the distance started laughing.
I immediately stood up, put my fist in the air, smiled, and went,
"Yeeeaah!" Then I rode over to the girls, who didn't yet recognize me
but happen to be in my higher math classes, and I asked jokingly, "You
like that?"
They laughed and and then did a doubletake, sensing the incongruency of
someone that enjoys studying advanced math topics yet also tries to ride
a unicycle down a very steep hill, "Oh it's *you*?! What are you
doing?!"
To which I tersely responded, "Trying to ride my unicycle down the
hill." 😄
After reading some of the comments, I feel pretty blessed. I've heard
very few negative comments while unicycling.
