Probably the best place to look is on the Shimano Europe website. It
still shows most of the older 9 speed groups. You have to look through
each group separately to see if they have cassettes. When you pull up
an exploded view of the cassette it shows the sizes available.

Mmyeah, I was hoping to avoid that. Also, the only non-current group I
have on there is pre-06 105, the 9sp Ultegra and DA stuff seems to be
missing (which is where a lot of the interesting combinations are). 9sp
105 appears to be limited to 12/13-23/25, in all four combinations, Tiagra
just the 12-23. I'm looking for a fairly short cassette starting with 11
in 9s, so as far as I can figure now I'd be looking at the Ultegra 11-21
-- corncob for the first 7 and then 2 2t jumps, or the 11-23 (minus the 16
and plus the 23). SRAM 970 comes in the same sets, DA also. I can't find
anything at all on Miche cassettes, but I'd be tempted to assume something
similar. It just seems like if you wanna start with an 11, your only
options are going to 21 or 23, no larger, no smaller. Ah, it'll probably
work reasonably well.

Settle Cycles website in England has a pretty comprehensive listing of
every 9 speed cassette you can buy from Shimano. Universal Cycles
website in the US has quite a listing of the Miche cassettes. They
also say you can buy individual cogs for Miche cassettes so you could
create your own I suppose. Some people have mentioned IRD having
cassettes that start with 11 and go up to higher cogs.

Gee, thanks for the vote of confidence. Shimano's website is next to
useless for 9s stuff, because it only lists the new 10s groups and the
group that was replaced this year (9s 105, in this case, which has very
few cassette options to start with).

I use a 14-25 9 speed with a bail out 32 sprocket in place of the
original 25.

Although this uses the parts from two cassettes the extra cost is
negligable as the 32 doesn't wear out (over 18000 miles so far) as it
is larger and rarely used. In fact that 32 sprocket was on the
original cassette supplied with the bike (an 11-32) so I simply
retained it when replacing that cassette, hence my custom cassette cost
no extra.

If your custom cassette can be made from the small sprockets from a
"road" cassette and larger sprockets from an "mtb" cassette, then the
larger ones will wear relatively little and the additional cost will be
minimal as the life of the larger sporckets will be relatively long.

Cool, thanks. I found an 11-23 in HG50/Tiagra Shimano on that site, which
I haven't seen on any other webstore. If I can find that somewhere for a
price similar to the Deore HG50 cassettes I'll probably take that one.

IRD does indeed have a 9s 11-28 in steel. Too bad it MSRPs at 80 bucks,
but it's an option to keep in mind. Oh, wait, they also have one in pure
steel cogs rather than spidered ones for 49-60 MSRP.

They also sell 'cassettes' CNC machined from a single block of aluminum
and an MTB cassette with non-stick coating, in case you want to fry an
egg, and they claim you still need to lubricate the *cassette*, despite
the teflon -- which is kind of weird since the cassette as such deosn't
benefit from lube.
