  1. I feel great! I'm 49, been running about 4 years, and am not very
competitive. But I got it in my head to try a local 10k
(www.greatraceofagoura.com) mostly because it's supposed to have such a
fun party. It's a really hilly course.

I'm a slow runner, 10:30 at best, usually run about 5 miles 3 times a
week. Just recently read Galloway's book, and am going to try going
longer once a week with more walk breaks. After really working hard I
was sick last week, so basically had a two week taper -- ha!

So with all the hills, my time was slower than I hoped, but not so bad.
I ran it in 1:13:58, for a pace just under 12 minutes. What excites
me is that I placed 23/31 in my age group, and since I'm just months shy
    of 50, I checked that out -- I would have placed 18/37 . I was worried
that I'd be coming in last.

Maybe I might like this 10k stuff after all. It felt really good. I'm
tired now, and I think I gave it my all. Interesting, though -- partly
because of all those hills, a couple of which were really steep, I had
to walk more than I would have, and consequently my last mile felt
    really strong.

    Hooray! Thanks for listening!

  2. Congratulations.
You see, you can do more than you think, if you just give it a go!
BTW I don't think 10:30 is all that slow, not even when I was under 60.
Now I bet you can't wait for your birthday!

    Congratulations.

hey, those hills are made for walking. Or at least slowing down.
Personally I try to run a hilly course at even effort, so I slow on
the uphill and speed up on the downs. Running downhill fast takes some
practice. So anyway, sounds like you raced well, you adjusted to the
course and now you have a new goal. Go go for it!

Enjoy the run! and thanks for the race report!

  5. Congrats Deborah! Watch out, these things can get addictive because
they're so fun! Glad you had a good time! As you get more experience
and miles the times will come down, I'll bet you'll see quite an
improvemnt in the next year. Running makes it *almost* fun to turn 50,
at least you're in a new age group (from someone who just did...)

That's what got me all excited about running, right at the start.
I don't really agree with all his stuff anymore, but hell - he got me
    hooked.

Hooray for you, you mean. When's the next one?
