  1. I was just wondering about protein supplementation and suppressing
    appetites.

My husband wanted to start supplementing, he works out 5 days a week
running for 20 minutes on the treadmill followed by a weight routine.
He alternates upper body with lower body on these 5 days. He comes
home from the gym starving and tends to eat, which is a problem with
his willpower, but he said that he heard protein shakes help curve
    appetite.

So this morning he woke up and blended 3 cups of skim milk, 1 cup
strawberries, 1 banana, and 3 scoops of vanilla whey powder. He drank
half of that for breakfast and will drink the rest after his workout
tonight. Just wondering if he's going about it the right way, how much
protein he should be eating to lose weight and get in shape without
having the body of a gladiator....

    Thanks,
    KR

The question you should be asking is 'how many calories should he be
consuming to lose weight" - the answer is 'less than maintenance'. i.e. he
should be expending more calories than he is consuming. Adequate nutrition
is more involved than just being concerned about protein. Is he eating
vegetables for instance? From where is he getting his minerals and vitamins?
His antioxidants? He needs to balance his carbs, fats, proteins with an
    adequate and varied diet.

  3. He does eat vegetables. On a typical day he eats:

    7am: glass of milk
    10:30: decaf coffee, muffin sometimes
12:30: whole wheat sandwich, or leftovers (about half meat, half
veggie), water, 1/2 cup fat-free yogurt, 1 piece of fruit
    5:00: piece of fruit
6:30: supper (always home made, always equal vegetable portion and
meat portion, smaller carb portion of rice, pasta, or grain. Sometimes
spaghetti or other tomato based psata meal, water to drink)
    7:30: gym
9:00: home, usually eats crackers and piece of fruit, or something
along these lines... Also takes a multivitamin around this time.

  4. KR,
I would agree that eating foods that are high in protein keep you
feeling full longer. I would possibly disagree on using his protein
powder smoothies to lose weight. I have successfully used a similar
smoothie recipe to gain around 20 or 30 pounds in around 6 months (I
was wanting to increase my muscle mass so I was happy with this). When
I drink a smoothie like that, I am feeling ready to chomp down when it
is dinner time even though I just drank a big smoothie. I feel like
since the protein is in a powder form your body can more quickly
process it and it doesn't leave you feeling full very long. I would
personally eat some lean meats such as chicken or fish if I had his
goals to suppress appetite through protein consumption. He should also
drink a lot of water and eat a healthy diet that does not contain too
many refined foods. In my experience, I burn up refined foods quickly
in my body and am left feeling hungry quickly. I also don't feel good
when I eat a lot of stuff that is highly refined (e.g. twinkies,
    donuts, hotdogs, sodas... ).
Regarding the workouts, I personally get very bad weightlifting
workouts if I do them after running or any kind of cardio. I would
lift first, do cardio second. An increase in muscle mass will also
    help him burn calories.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Good Luck,
    James

I wouldn;t worry too much about 'low fat' - fat is not the enemy - in fact
saturated fats is not the enemy

most of his carbs should be coming from veg - not pasta, bread etc

    much
protein he should be eating to lose weight and get in shape without
having the body of a gladiator....

There is no "right way" - what he's doing sounds fine. Any exercise is
better than none, and the fact that he's paying attention to what he
eats matters more than the specifics. People have managed to gain
weight, maintain their weight, and lose weight on all manner of diets.
The thing to do is find what works for him and understand that nothing
works forever unchanged so be prepared to adjust as necessary along the
    way.

The shake you mention, however, contains a lot of calories and, at some
point, you have to consider calories in versus calories expended -
taking in more calories than you require will usually result in a weight
gain, not loss. Muscle gained usually isn't a bad thing but most people
starting out on exercise programs usually need to focus on losing body
fat first and then worrying about adding muscle once they're reached a
    goal weight.

So this evening you'll know if 3 scoops of whey curbed the appetite!
It would kill mine. Try to make him take just 1 right before
workout. I'd suggest "after" but he's eating dinner after the gym. It
makes sense to allocate protein intake around the training time.

Indeed. Another recent study shows the advantage of EAAs (whey) and
carbs right after a workout, in this case, with untrained males:

Bird SP, Tarpenning KM, Marino FE. Independent and combined effects of
liquid carbohydrate/essential amino acid ingestion on hormonal and
muscular adaptations following resistance training in untrained men.

    So that's ~930 cal/day just from his shake, 5 days a week, and 97g
protein... dunno what he's looking for from his program but I don't think
this is the way to lose weight.

Send him to www.fitday.com and have him track his intake for a week. I think
    he'll be surprised.
