Yes, to Christine, let's plan a party! And Dan, if you and Mrs. Dan
come, I'll label the non alcoholic drinks -- I suspect your wife got
one of Fred's mai tais, and they are LETHAL!

And yes, Christine, please help me with chat, I threw in the towel in

    Okay, will do!

I am going to make some limoncello for this party, I think. Want to
lend some Meyer lemons for this cause? I have heard that Meyer lemons
make fantastic limoncello... And I have a fantastic recipe for
    limoncello.

Do you have any gallon glass jars? I have some down in southern CA,
which I can pick up when I go back after Christmas, but if I wanted to
start earlier, I would either need to get a new gallon glass jar here,
    or borrow one.

I do have one recipe, that I have wanted to try, from one of Joanne
Weir's books.. her limoncello recipe takes about 3 months to make, so
would have to start earlier. I had thought of making a batch of that
to compare with this other recipe, to see which is better.

The other recipe is one that originated with an eGulleteer, and was
    adopted by LA Times.

This calls for a side by side tasting, doncha think? 😉

Christine, who is waiting to be called a lush again....

It was a very relaxed, fun dinner. Our guests were great. We hadn't
met my niece's roommate before, but we liked him right off the bat.

As to the food, Crash and I were both disappointed. Things I'd made
before which were wonderful then, were just okay this time. Our guests
didn't mind at all. It's been a long time since they've had a home
cooked meal of this magnitude. Neither of them had had a turkey
    dinner in several years.

The saving grace was the sour cream apple pie. It vanished
immediately after dinner. Everyone waited on the other pie. Crash
and my niece gobbled down two slices. Crash is INSISTING on me baking
him some more apple pies. I hadn't realized that I'd never baked that
    pie for him before.

The Watergate salad was also wildly popular. I have strict
instructions to make two apple pies and two batches of the salad for
Christmas. With extra maraschino cherries in the salad for my niece.

We opted not to use the nice tablecloth because a couple diners were
self-described slobs. Oh, and the roommate, bless him, slipped and
used the tiny bowl we used for cranberries as an ashtray. He was
mortified when he noticed that he hadn't used the ashtray that was
    right next to it.

We also had an ongoing burping contest Niece and I tied as winners.
If there had been root beer, we'd have done even better. ; )

Well, it sounds like a *wonderful* dinner, Carol! So, what/why the

The dressing was blah. I think I used too little poultry seasoning
and should have used salted butter. I prefer Beard's original
seasoning with tarragon, but Crash doesn't care for it.

The smashed potatoes were good, but a whole head of roasted garlic
overpowered the 10 pounds of potatoes. Hey, anyone need some leftover
    potatoes?

The gravy was a little runny and I forgot to salt and pepper it.

We experimented with adding cinnamon to the cranberry orange relish.
It was delicious, but not what we're used to. We'll go back to the
    original next year.

Jill's turkey cottage pie ... the gravy was too runny and we had to
add more to our individual servings. The frozen peas had previously
been used as a cold pack, so they were kinda dry and weird. Then
    those mega-garlic potatoes on top. : (

Our biggest problem was lack of sufficient salt.

Reminds of the year I was guilty of the other extreme. I used so much
poultry seasoning and sage that the dressing was *green*. I was a little
disappointed in mine this year because I had run out of Penzey's poultry
seasoning and sage and had to buy some at the supermarket. I have been
spoiled by Penzey's. It was still good, but not excellent. :-(

I make mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving but I don't eat them. I only eat
the candied yams. David eats the mashed. He doesn't like any extra
flavoring in the potatoes beyond salt, butter, and cream. I did sneak in
one raw garlic clove while boiling the potatoes. He seemed happy. To me,
a whole head of roasted garlic is a *lot* of garlic, except when I'm
    spreading it on bread. :-)

    Quoted message said:

But you could have repaired that. Although gravy is last minute and you
probably ran out of time. My gravy was actually perfect this year,
except... When I first tasted it I thought I had used too many carrots in
both the stock and under the turkey while roasting. The gravy had a kinda
sweet taste. By the time it had simmered for a while and got to the table,
    it had mellowed down nicely.

I understand perfectly. For years I always made a rather elaborate
cranberry-fig chutney that was spiced and many other "things" in it. It
really was delicious. The past couple of years or so, I've taken to
preferring either the relish like you made or a simple homemade whole
    cranberry sauce (cooked).

I don't like turkey well enough to make a pot pie or anything else out of
it after the first day of eating it sliced. David has eaten most of the
    leftovers.

We had no lack of salt. :-) I think it was just about right this year, but
I've been know to be heavy-handed with it at times.

I think it's rare with such a multi-dish meal as Thanksgiving or Christmas
to have absolutely everything go right. This was one of my better years,
but by the time I got to the table, I was too tired to eat it. I picked at
it, but then later in the evening had another plate that I really enjoyed.

    Oh, don't I know it!!!!
I have gotten so I don't plan on getting out of there with spending
just a little. I know how I am, and I usually come away with a ton of
spices, to the tune of quite a few dollars. I usually end up getting

discover something else I should have gotten.

I used about 4 pounds of potatoes and 5 heads, yes, 5 *heads* of roasted
