It really comes down to your type of riding (road/mountain, racing, fast
club rides, touring, short easy rides) and what's most important to you
(walkability, platform size, amount of float, ease of entry and exit).

Shimano SPDs are very popular for mountain biking, and also for road riding.
Shoes with recesses for the cleat make walking easy.

Look pedals are the standard for road racing, but are no fun to walk in.

Then you have Time, Speedplay, Crank Brothers, Shimano SPD-SL, and various
other types that each have their fans. Some folks still like the old rat
trap pedals with toe clips and straps.

My own favorite combination for road riding is Shimano PD-M520 SPD pedals,
and Shimano T092 shoes (recessed cleat, looks like a road shoe).

Sheldon doesn't deal in concrete, his expertise is in cycling.

Shimano) and about €50 (Dura-Ace), so there's more than enough choice.

Is there any difference in pedal mounting sizes? At the moment I have a
very old Solida crankset with Kyokuto Top-Run pedals(mid 80s Raleigh
Rapide).

Robin: I'd avoid the SPD-R pedal system. That was one of Shimano's rare
flops. It wasn't a great system (kinda loose, floppy feel to them) and was
abandoned relatively shortly after it came out. Finding shoes that fit them
may be possible now (if you look hard), but won't be so easy in the very
near future.
