I've seen people try to do that with scripts, but its a slightly heavy
method.

I just use a "!delete Xpost %>3" on global with a lower limit for some
groups, thats keeps most **** under control.

I use google groups (duck and cover), I can access it from anywhere
(pc, mac, blackberry, ipod touch) it saves my subscriptions and I can
RSS feed it into my home page. Plus I don't have to install anything
on my restricted work PC.

for the moment i use it on my tablet, though it does have some
shortcomming, attually quite a lot, but it does serve a need.

Yes, and I believe the new version 4 can also ignore subthreads. But
neither of them are free (Free Agent has been discontinued).
