I think that it is great that you are so excited. I know many people who

Good for you . If anybody in this NG doesn't look at time on the bike as a
special time, w/o any reference to the stinking bicycle, just empasis on the
ride, needs another form of therapy.

Congratulations on the new grandchild. I normally just lurk here but had to
step out to tell you not to wait until they're old enough for a child
carrier. I've taken all my grandchildren riding in a trailer, usually
around the age of one. I'm now waiting on my first great-granddaughter to
reach her first birthday 🙂

We fooled around with a bike seat with #1, she always fell asleep and then it
was "hold her head up with one hand" all the way back home. Finally got the
trailer, waited too long with #2, who as a matter of principle screamed the
whole time (which was short) both times we tried to have a trailer ride. Kids.

Suggestion born of experience is to get a trailer that will let you strap in a
nice deep "baby bucket" car seat, and make the trailer part of the routine,
starting "early".

BTW, #2 rode extensively on his Trek Mountain Cub when barely three-- multiple
laps of the Rice (Houston) circular bikepath, us generally following. Very
enthusiastic. It's a control thing. --TP

What parts of our bikes will survive 25 years?

A frind of mine who was born in the 40's and was quite a bike rider
in the 60's and 70's until health problems forced him to quit. Since
I used to race and worked in bike shops we'd talk about bikes. He
was amazed to learn that most bikes don't have freewheels, that
center-pull brakes were no longer produced and that sewups are no
longer supplied on most top of the line bikes.

I've tried to predict the bicycle future in the past. In the 1980's
I predicted that composite wheels would replace spoked wheels by now
since more gears could be fitted without the required dishing further
weakening wheels. I did predict that clipless pedals would displace
clips and straps but I missed the boat on indexing which I thought
was a fad that would die off shortly after cyclists regained their
senses. I thought monocoque frames would replace those made from
tubes. I expected some clever mechanism to replace the crude front
derailleur.

So in the future, which parts will we still be using and which will
be obsolete?
