We can create as complex a world of rules for civility and social expectations, working for peace, but some people will not relent until they force the ultimate confrontation - kill or be killed. OBL was leading such a mission. As were the Seals. The difference is that OBL targeted innocents and the Seals are focused on those with blood on their hands.
Much like your real world, as sad as that may be...thanks for your justification...

LOL! More wisdom from you/img/vbsmilies/smilies/rolleyes.gif...give it a rest, pal...

There are several issues concerning this assassination which concern me.

1.OBL was unarmed and was not providing resistance when the Americans attacked.
2.He was killed as a result of this attack.
3.On the news channels I watched (CNN, SKY, Russia Today, France 24, BBC) all had footage of Americans celebrating the death of OBL and citing it as "revenge for 9/11"

Let me qualify my remarks : OBL sponsored terrorism. OBL could well have been the mastermind and supporter of 9/11 specifically. OBL did provide political and other support to Al Qaeda and
the Taliban.

However, the USA and others claim to be "upholding international law". It's "what makes us different to 'them'".
In this instance we know OBL was unarmed when the attack took place (despite the earlier lies told by the White House that he was armed). We also know that he did not resist the attack (despite the earlier lies told by the White House that he had fought back).

The attackers should have arrested Osama Bin Laden and taken him in to custody. Instead they shot and killed a man who put up no defence when attacked.
Where does this leave America in relation to upholding due process?

OBL should have been questioned, charged and tried for crimes he committed in a court of law. This is the standard which America claims to uphold.
Instead we have a country, America, which appears to endorse revenge and retribution and the bypassing of the law and due process.
Regardless of the crimes committed, every person is answerable to the law.

My own view is that it was expedient for America to ensure that OBL to never be tried in a court of law.
If he was tried all of the dealings between the CIA and OBL in the 1980's would have been revealed in open court for all to see.
By trying OBL in a court of law, all of the political/logistical/military aid received from America, courtesy of US taxpayers, would have been aired.
Also by trying OBL in a court of law, exposure of what actually happened in the run up to 9/11 would have seen the light of day and would have contradicted the established narrative.

As for the media coverage of public reaction to the murder of OBL in America? The reaction was reprehensible in my view. All of the reaction shown reiterated the themes of "revenge and retribution".
Revenge and retribution instead of the law.

I usually stay completely neutral and away from discussions about political matters, but this issue has really struck home with me.

Am I glad there's one less bat-****-crazy, freedom-hating, murder-inciting psychopath on the globe? Yes. Without a doubt.

Do I approve of the way he was killed, if it was in truth unarmed and offering no defense (acknowledging that we'll probably never know the full true story)? No.

Do I have a better suggestion for apprehending him, without resorting to execution, that would NOT result in expensive, lengthy trials that would allow him to publicize his psychopathy and make all Americans targets for rescue attempts, retributive kidnappings and beheadings? No.

My biggest problem about the whole affair, however, is seeing the subsequent videos of Americans celebrating his death in the streets, shooting fireworks and drinking champagne and waving flags and dancing in joy. Does no one remember how WE felt, on September 11, when we saw THEM celebrating and dancing with joy after the Twin Towers fell? Didn't it make you want to bomb them back to the Stone Age, if they weren't already nearly there? Didn't it make you want to kill somebody? Some of them would already have planned revenge, for his death. How many MORE of them are now headed for airports with explosives in the shoes/luggage/wherever, enraged at the shots of Americans publicly celebrating the death of someone they (however wrongly) loved and respected? It makes me sick to my stomach with dread.

Our only solution, then, is to kill them all. Kill all of his relatives. All of his friends. All of his business acquaintances. Anybody who ever met him, listened to his broadcasts, donated to his cause, hid him, sheltered him, bankrolled him. Execute them all. But wait -- that's not enough. We then have to destroy all THEIR relatives, friends, and business acquaintances, no matter what country they live in. And then all the relatives, friends, etc., of all THOSE people. And before we're done, we have to kill EVERYBODY who thinks it was wrong to kill them, and then THEIR friends and family..... until the only people left on earth are the kind of people who think it's perfectly fine to kill millions of people to be sure we're safe. Then we get to live with them.

Don't get me wrong. As I said, I'm glad he's gone, if he really is. But anybody who thinks this is the end of something is sadly short-sighted. I think it's just the beginning of an even more terrible time in our history. And I think the only true solution belongs to Someone other than the politicians.

Hardly nit picking Tony and you need to get over your God complex. You posted **** and you got called out for it... Just read back through this thread, it reads like "Tony Vs The World."

Lim, have you seen actual footage of what happened during the attack? No, neither have the rest of us. Specifically, how do you actually know that Bin Laden was unarmed during a prolonged firefight? You make it sound like they knocked on the door and when he opened it they just shot him in the head... I'm guessing it was nothing like that and if they just wanted him dead they would have just taken out the complex with a predator drone or something as equally remote. We'll likely get a few more versions of "what really happened" before the week is out, all dependant on the news source and which Government agency is being questioned.

Justice. While in theory I'd agree they should have captured Bin Laden and given him a prolonged trial I mostly believe that for guys like him his offenses are beyond what's reasonable for "justice" to occour. Terrorists who are dumb enough to go on camera and celebrate their crimes, no matter how long ago, pretty much tried themselves in public and declared a guilty verdict.

^^^yawn...the cousin of the initial anonomous "Einstein" that I have neither the time nor effort to play connect the dots with...gotta admit thought that ol' Strawman is one ubiquitous dude - keeps poppin' up everywhere...

edit: And let's get something straight: I don't claim to be God, a god, or anything of the sort. I will claim to be a puppetmaster extraordinaire for one particular forum member who shall remain nameless. I, and only I, have command over his strings/img/vbsmilies/smilies/biggrin.gif. Wanna make me see him jump again??

Late to the party and without a clue, but plenty of guessin' and speculation - what a loser, again...

I'm not sure who "them" were that were celebrating the Twin Tower attacks.

In the immediate aftermath of the Twin Tower attacks there was TV footage of people celebrating. They weren't celebrating the attack. In fact the footage shown was people celebrating
something else entirely.
