Very lucky. But stabilising jacks on the lorry doing the lifting (like
the sort that big mobile cranes have) would have saved a few red
faces. Wonder what on earth was in the car to give it enough weight to
make the grab crane over-balance - gold bullion [1] or something?

Beat me to it 🙂
Considering it's made up of hydrogen and oxygen, it's bloody heavy
stuff.

Car full of water will add perhaps 1.5-3 tons to the weight.
At the full stretch of the boom, adds a lot of leverage.
A quick calculation will show that this vastly exceeds the moment due to the
weight of the truck so it will (and did) topple.

I like the positions of the small dog between frames 3 and 4.

Look at the pictures - the car wasn't full of water.
Amusingly had he parked the crane closer to the edge it may well not have
gone in!

I was 'on your side' until this. Just let go.
I found the netkoppishness that arose from your detractors mildly
disturbing, but you are now falling into the same pond, but with the
addition of a dose of some bitterness.
FFS, get out one your bikes out and go for a ride.

I'm not so sure. Since the operator would have had to be on the seaward
side of the crane (to see), it looks remarkably like him (or her) in
photo 4 level, dressed in a yellow fluoro jacket, hitting the water
right beside the last visible bit of the crane boom. In which case I
seriously doubt he'd be uninjured with X tons of crane arriving on top
of him very rapidly afterwards.
